Isnt death like... really depressing?
well, recently, since not having a telly or the internet in my room ive been lying awake at night thinking how pointless existence is and how little worth our lives actually have.
also, the bit where you die at the end and thats 'it' is fairly scary. Its all enough to turn you to drink.
So, anyone got any tips for convincing yourself to believe in god? i think i need a psychological crutch or im just going to go insane. It just seems so damn implausible.

Death isn't depressing.
Once you're dead, you're dead and no longer able to feel anything, including depression.

I expect that's true but who knows for sure?
It would be really depressing to be depressed after death.

Extra reason not to be depressed about it now then.
It'd be even more depressing if you'd have been depressed both before and after death.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
Ofc death is depressing. That's why we have so many distractions. Our appliances will save us from contemplating the big questions. Who has time to worry about death when there's such a good film on TV.
Who has time to worry about death when your trying to figure out why your ping is so lousy when playing Counter-Strike.
Who has the time to worry about death when your Jenna Does Everyone MPEG just finished downloading.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
you live and after a while you die. a few years later noone but your closest relatives and friends will give a damn and you will be forgotten. most likely it wont make much of a difference to this world if you are alive or dead.
on the bright side, there are a few billion people on this planet who have exactly the same problem. dont worry too much about it, you cant change it anyway, so why care?

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
exactly
that 'why worry when you can't change it' thing is very very important.
when my life is free of distractions however, ie when im lying in bed trying to go to sleep, my mind wanders, i get depressed, and everything just turns dark and depressing (it probably doesnt help that my surroundings are also dark).
but it also raises the question of 'what if there is life after death'. This seems the only possible out, therefore, it makes it the most important question possible. While my answer at the moment is 'probably not' i know i would feel a lot more secure if i thought the opposite. Sadly the only evidence to life after death is sparse and anecdotal, which isnt the best position to be in. However, trying to think about the afterlife from a rational perspective is probably almost always going to be a mistake, being able to detect such a thing from this plane is pretty impossible too.
personally, i think id believe more if i took more acid, so thats my first line of enquiry, i need a deep spiritual experience

LSD would hardly be considered a deep spiritual experience. Maybe a cheap hallucinogenic experience.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
well, not by itself obviously, you cant take it and expect to get a deep spiritual experience.
however, to my knowledge, it GREATLY increases the chance of having one. (plus itll take my mind off the whole 'dying' thing while i look at pictures of women and watch their boobs jiggle)

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
if there is a live after death you will be just as insignificant over there as you are here, or it will be even worse, because more people are dead than alive today. or, in other words, if there is a life after death it will suck just as much as the one before death
you will be dead for a long long time (i.e. forever), so there is enough time to think about it once you are dead
PS i strongly advise against taking acid and then thinking about death. it probably wont be a nice experience.

yes, acid is somewhat bad. for example i thought about killing myself just to see how much trouble my so called friends would get into for it. (very bad trip with extreme paranoia)

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
well, for me at least, i get lots of paranoia on mushrooms, and a little on weed.
but acid seemed to be a much 'cleaner' experience. To me at least.
plus i wouldnt be doing it on my own, i have enough druggy friends who are experienced that we can look out for each other.
also, i must add that i was only half serious about the acid thing.
oh, one more thing. I saw a 'fact thingy' which said that there are more people alive today than have ever died. Of course, even if that is true, it wont be when i die (hopefully) so its kinda irrelevant. I just thought it was interesting.

So there are 6 billion people about....
But there have been people about and dying since they became humans. So that's what...70,000 years?
So with exponential growth of population over 70,000 years with everyone one those dying until now, there's not way that's less than 6 billion!

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
Well 70,000 years ago there were only a few thousand people at most. But it's not the population at any one time that really matters, its the huge buildup of numbers that takes place over the long period of time. Exponentially increasing for thousands of years etc.
Clearly the population has never been as large as it is now, however the total number of people that have existed over all of time so far is far far greater.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
someone who is good at math could probably figure out how many children everyone needs to have for this to work out.
70000 years, thats how many generations? 2000? ofc, the further you go back in time, the lower the necessary increase in birthrate needed to compensate, but still you would need more and more children each generation

I suspect the growth rate was quite flat, at least until modern times. On the other hand, human fertility rates are fairly high--they had to be because until recent times most people didn't live beyond childhood.

Estimates I've seen put the total number of people that have ever existed at ~100B (give or take a fair bit). Since there are only 6B alive currently, that means there aren't more people alive today than have ever been alive.
Still, even if only about 6% of all people who've ever lived are alive today that's still quite impressive imho.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
If you include all the people who died age 2 or whatever it's actually far more than you'd think by looking at population charts. Remember that death rates and birth rates were both extremely high in every country prior to about 1800 or whatever.
Edit: Beaten to it by tact

Someone asked about the "more people alive now than have died" thing in the "Questions and Answers" section of the Times a while ago, and the consensus was that it was a load of twaddle.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
From the experiences my m8's have had, I will never touch acid. Ever.
Drove one to mental problems and the others had such ****ed up unpleasant experiences that there is no attraction for me.
I mean, it's not even a real high. It's just for the experience. I'd prefer to get high than see shit moving through my veins and insects exploding from my toilet and eating my feet.

Re: Isnt death like... really depressing?
I've never done Acid, but I'd recommend mushrooms to anyone without major psychological problems.
There is a distinct high with some hallucanagenics, and it's a lot stronger / more pleasurable than something like cannabis, imho. Plus, the flashes of "insight" you get are really really cool.
The only reason I don't do them regularly is (a) the taste of many of these things is foul, (b) I don't have that much spare time and (c) I suffer from self-loathing quite a lot, and on mushrooms at least, my subconscious can kick the shit out of me quite a bit.
