Re: What would you do?
Learn to cook, especially foods from other cultures. Seriously, in my preparations for university I decided I'd make nice stuff out of "nothing". Sure I can go out and buy the exact same thing off the shelves, but my way a) is actually quite fun b) is cheaper c) is healthier d) makes me not watch TV or go on the computer and I actually feel alot better for it.
Or play/attend a new sport. Something cool. The ice hockey season is starting soon. Thats cool.
Other than that the only thing I can think of is to go travelling, and thats pretty expensive...

Hmmm... If you have the space, build a swimming pool
If you don't, build a pond.

Hmm a pond would be quite nice actually - but I'm going to be moving to NY in 6 months so I would not be able to enjoy it for long!

Just two pages a day and you will have the first draft in six months. Then you can take a break from the novel for a few weeks and do some copy editing in your spare time after you are re-employed.

Re: What would you do?
I was at a point once where I had the same option, but it fell through at the last moment, potential things I had planned though:
1. Compose a song, or a number of songs I had been thinking about for a while.
2. Finish any number of programming projects laying dormant on my HDD, most probably finishing my adventure game as top priority.
3. Fix the car and do it up all nice like.
4. Travel, and catch up with some friends I've not seen in a few years.

Is it actually cheaper to make your own food? I always thought it would be much cheaper to just buy the food ready made (although clearly not as healthy or taste as nice).

Re: What would you do?
Actually thats something I realised after I posted - all the expensive stuff such as spices was borrowed from the parents. So yeah, chances are I'll be enjoying potatoes and pasta every night in uni

Re: What would you do?
Yeh ive really been into the cooking since I graduated from uni.
I've found that Nandos Peri Peri sauce transforms any dish! just stick it on your chicken or tuna steaks and grill for a while and perfection.
Also, garlic and ginger paste with a bit of chilli powder is wicked for making indian style chicken etc...

Go through all your posessions, get rid of the stuff you don't want and organise the stuff you do want.
If you're as consumer driven and as disorganised as me it'll take you a long time

The secret is to buy in bulk, cook in bulk.
I think you'd find anyway that if you tallied up what it costs you in take-away each week vs what it costs to make yourself, while it's a little more effort it will save you a fortune.

we already have 2. One for the garden tools, one for the workshop / ride on lawn mower + extras / cement mixer, and this one for the garden furniture (marquees, tables, chairs, etc) and small trailer

I suspect I'll actually have six months off now, at the minimum, before I start doing anything vaguely productive.
I intend to use the time extremely poorly indeed.

If you have the money then go travelling.
Or do some volunteer work abroad.
Or learn a language.
I'd do all three if I had 6 months off.

Genius! I shall learn a language!
But which one? I'm thinking Japanes - thats a pretty cool and useful one to know in this day and age isnt it? Also how? Attend college classes? Teach myself?
All Systems Go - I had the choice of having either 4 weeks off before starting work, or 7 months.
Realising I would never have this 7 months again once I began a life of investment banking, I clutched at the chance....

I've just had about 6 months off and I feel great, so I suggest to do the same as I.
Pack up your stuff in backpack, sell the rest and travel around, visit friends, places you've never seen, experience things you've only dreamt about
