Waistcoats
I want to buy a few.
I just spent 1.5 hours in Woking looking for some. Now Woking isn't the fashion capital of the UK, but it has a decent amount of high street stores. I checked everywhere from Oxfam to Burtons to Debenhams.
I couldn't find anywhere that sold them.
I just assumed that normal clothes places would sell them
I might widen my search to Guildford or even venture into the murky depths of London in the hunt.
Has anyone got any ideas where I could get them from? I know Phang said he got his from ebay but I only want to do that as a last resort as I don't like buying clothes I can't try on first.

I assumed that Tom wanted to buy decent waistcoats, not shitty ones made from the cut-offs of old clothes.

Re: Waistcoats
There's a really good shop in London that sells nice waistcoats, its located just off the corner of Oxford Circus in the nineteenth century.

Strangely enough, I actually have a 1930`s waist coat; bought in a secondhand shop in Portsmouth 20 years ago. Proper silk and that; loads of pockets; ideal for festivals. Best not to dry clean though, and ofc always leave the last waist button undone

Re: Waistcoats
i get mine from the bald man at ede and ravenscroft even though everyone says they're getting too commercial now and modern but the bald man has been there 40 years and he's not modern and anyway they were my tailors in oxford so why would i abandon them? and the qm liked them and she was top notch god rest her soul although she's probably up there with Him drinking gin with jesus and princess margaret.
But I only buy mine with my suits.

My friend has a shitload he got off ebay, some of them are pretty cool. He's building up something of a collection and flogging them to the likes of you. Get your arse to Oxford and I'll sort you out with a fitting.

You just go by chest size. There's an adjustor for most waistcoats on the back to make it fit a bit better.

I know; the adjuster (adjustor. sp! who cares.) only recently worn out abit; it`s 1930 vintage, I only got it dry cleaned once in the twenty years I`ve owned it; did abit of harm to it as well :/

Re: Waistcoats
I was unsure what a waist coat was until piyrt was kind enough to post a picture of his. Turns out it is the English equivilent of the vest of a three-piece suit.
I have several, and at my age, I look extremely dignified when I wear mine. Juries don't need to listen to what I say, they know they can trust in my vest.

over here, "wife-beater" is a slang term for a type of beer. Not a garment.

Re: Waistcoats
Actually I've heard vests get called wife-beaters.
Vests are usually thinner and worn as an undergarment. Wife-beaters are normally thicker and can be worn on their own (almost like a plain white or grey basketball top).

Nor do I see the occasion for successive nights wearing waistcoats arising that frequently.
Although maybe in Tomkat's new role as the Duke of York he'll prove me wrong, I'm unsure having been away from the internet recently.
