NAP expiration time
72 ticks is too much. It encourages static politics and is out of line with how the community used to handle these things, which was generally a 24 tick notice period. I propose changing it back to that 24 tick period.

Re: NAP expiration time
Or better, when proposing a nap, you can select terms, like 'expiration time' and a personal favourite of mine 'no ingal def against napped/allied alliances'

Re: NAP expiration time
Why NAP ingame at all if you intend to break it sometime in the future.
I like it as 72h, its more formal this way, which is what separates it from loose deals on irc.

Re: NAP expiration time
Isn't a NAP temporary in nature? Otherwise, if it'd be permanent, you'd call it an Alliance rather then a NAP.
A NAP in essence is just an agreement between 2 or more parties to temporarily cease all hostility and aggression with the goal to recover or focus on something else.
I mean, if you'd NEVER EVER show any aggression towards someone else, there's no need for a pact to make it official. The fact that it needs to be made official is because it's temporary and will at one point in time be broken, very likely atleast. It doesn't mean it's always temporary, but the intention is.
So it'd be a nice feature if you can choose the details when agreeing on a NAP.
I didn't know they included the option to NAP ingame. Back in the days, a NAP was just an oral agreement, like playing Risk and saying you will not attack but no rule will prevent you from lying and attacking anyway

Are you surprised?
I sort of like what Theam is getting at, in that you could include multiple variables:
-Maximum duration (optional).
-Notification period length (12tick incrementals).
-Ability to defend each other (on/off).
-Ability to defend against each other (on/off).
-Shared scans?
-Some other crap?
-This list sht is getting boring.
-I think I'll quit now.
-Bye.

Re: NAP expiration time
Ok, so it would appear there is no such thing as a NAP expiration time, in which case I would suggest adding one as per the later posts in this thread, of which Tzu's is a good summary.

Re: NAP expiration time
There is, however, a "minimum" nap time. Atleast there was in the beginning of the round when I played around and someone napped an ally I didnt like. Think it was either 48h or 72h.

It seems that after the first 72 hours, you can drop a nap instantly. Kinda defeats the purpose of it imo, it should be 24 hours to cancel at any time, or like mentioned earlier optional duration etc.

Re: NAP expiration time
Maybe this warrants its own thread, but if there is some form of 'negotiation' where you can fill in a standard NAP agreement, maybe it would be fun if also galaxies could NAP eachother? This way you introduce a whole new dynamic to the game which would only improve the meta game.
Does this sound viable or just plainly silly? (I only just thought of it and thinking things through isn't really my forte)

You'd risk having your galaxies napped to those of the enemy, making your attacks against them less effective. I don't know, but I believe that alliances want to stay in controle of their members at all times. Enabling the option to officially nap between galaxies will only result in internal chaos in the alliance.
Then again, perhaps that'd make the game more fun, I don't know.
Sun'Tzu's list is a nice summary. Alliance A fills it in and sends it to Alliance B. They accept/reject/negotiate and send it back. Back and forth until an agreement exists where both alliance agree to.
It should also be made public to the rest of the community, so that there will be no secret ingame naps. If you want to have a secret nap, you do it on IRC (with the risk that the nap can be ended at any given time).
Just my 2 cents.
