Think Appoco mentioned in the other thread that the HDD was full. If that was a joke or not I have no clue about.

Its even worse - they also dont back up after each change in the game (fleet prelaunch, production, research, messages, votes etc. etc. etc.). I think that clearly shows the cold-heartedness of the PATeam and also that Jolt is really just in it for the millions of dollar they make from PA
PATeam: Admit it - you know you want to. And you know what happens to ppl who dont admit their crimes in time ...

Unfortunately, robban1 has a point. They did used to back up every tick. Didn't they?

Re: rollback?
they did but chances are there were other reasons for choosing that time to roll back to, such as that being the tick where the least number of fleets were flying, so less people are affected by it, etc.

Re: rollback?
you know, if HDD is full,it means.. no more space to save backups..
other explanation: your clauset is full by porn magazines, you cant even open the door before it's all over you... you wont get another one in, will you? Without removing something first. that is...
-NO
my guess is that hdd drive went full, and wasnt able to save backups....

Well its a pretty stupid idea in more then one way to store backups to the same physical media and i give PATeam enough credit to not seriously think they do that ...

17:30 east coast. it's only a 5-hour difference. Would be 16:30 in *central us* timezone.

Re: rollback?
Well as we have such wonderful sites as sandmans and pilkara, where do the noobs out there think they their data from? Of course the data backs up each tick, and maybe the thing that caused the HDD to fill up happened 3 ticks before that, which is why the 3 tick rollback.
Of course im largely speculating, but im fresh out of sarcasm.
Its on back order what with Christmas approaching.

Ah. Not quite. The database dump only includes a few items available to the public ingame, as an additional service and as a counter-incentive to use bots to gather information ingame.

Actually, without being in a position to state how it is today, in r12 (iirc, may have been 13) there were problems with the backups keeping the game down for over a minute at a time and to allieviate this they were turned down to once every 3 ticks (and moved to :30, rather than :55, so they wouldn't screw up people's launches). It would appear that the time taken to perform the backups has been much improved (along with ticker speed, bless you Kloopy), but since this isn't the first time in the last few rounds the harddrive filling up has been a problem (last time I experienced it was r13), I wouldn't be surprised if they've kept it at once every 3 ticks to save space.
All that said, can someone update me on why they're giving us a million of each resource? What's that supposed to do?

we backup at every other tick at xx:30. The reason for this si that when the db gets big it takes a while to backup which results in downtime.
There was a 00:30 backup, however we could not verify that this was complete due to the nature of the failure, hence we had to revert to the 22:30 backup.

I agree entirly that this shouldn't have happened, and the Servers Manager has been actioned to take preventative action.
A rollback is not a good thing, but we believe that the current standing policy with roll backs is better than previoes ones. Now in the event of a roll back we will allways restart ticks 24 hours after the last good backup was taken (assuming that the game is not down for more than 24 hours), this means that the rollback will disadvantag eas few people as possible.

In case you're all wondering "actioned" is pateam-speak for "anally raped".

Nah anti de m8, the roll back has cost me about 500-600k in score... I had renamed my fleet at eta 4 before the crash (another black eye). which gave the game away for the roll back on the right kind of def.
I am not complaining As long as it was a technical thing.

The dump listings used by the tool sites are generated by the ticker and show a small portion of the universe data. I imagine the database for the entire game would be at least ten times larger than this (remember politics/alliance board/journal posts are in it too, possibly along with debug logs), and backing up every tick is really just a waste of disk space, especially when you remember that there aren't many actions in the game that can be ruined in two ticks but not in one.
As part of a tool I started in TheOtherGame, a script has logged every planet dump for every tick. After 1300+ ticks this database has reached several hundred megabytes, and thats without maintaining various table indexes or even galaxy/alliance lists. Just imagine how much bigger a backup for every game tick would be, even for just the previous week.

Seems atleast some of'em were kicked out of vacation mode. Atleast it happened to one of my galm8's. He lost some ships and roids earlier today, and he just came back from a few days of for work and thought he still were in vacation mode. Guess he might consider giving away login info next time he goes away

Re: rollback?
I dont know why, but when the rollback happened, I could research ALL the tech tree and it would work, i.e I researched and used unit scans (ran out of time to do much else), this is strange as I am a Free account.
Before you say it i wasnt upgraded, as I still had the "This is a free account" message at the top of the screen.

or didn't that happen yet?

Re: rollback?
Since Vacation mode was disabled ~ 1 1/2 weeks before the end of the round, free accounts could also research the whole tech tree. Sorry this wasn't publicised more (it was stuck on www.planetarion.com, and i'm pretty sure it was linked to for most of the rest of the round on the motd)
