Science and Empirical evidence tell us that at some point in the past (according to GR) the whole universe should have been a singularity. The problem with this is that singularities are smaller than the planck length, at which the laws of the universe effectively break down. In the absence of any testable statements from the various theories such as Ekpyrosis and so on, that might get round of this problem, what science and Empirical evidence show, is that we don't know enough to actually come to a conclusion on the matter.
