Although some of you may resent me as a newbie posting here, I would like to add something here as a parent myself.
Feel lucky that your parents are concerned about what you are doing on the internet. Do you actually believe they are just doing it to aggravate you?! Well, ok, some of them might be, but the majority of parents love you and care for you and want to protect you, plain and simple.
I didn't understand that when I was a teenager, and I resented every single encroachment on what I though was "my space". I guess I got pretty good at hiding everything, because I got heavily mixed-up in drugs and running with siome seriously bad people.
Now that I am grown, I have vowed to be involved with my kids. I don't mean just snooping around involved, I mean to have a relationship with my kids that will encourage them to come to me with any problems. It's hard to do this, and I have to catch myself when I dismiss some of their problems as "minor" or "petty". To a kid, everything is a major issue, and parents should realize this.
I just wanted you to see things from a parent's perspective. Maybe you won't be so harsh on them. Being a parent is ot an easy job for anyone, and kids don't exactly come with an individualized custom operators manual.

If parents know about the 'personal-space' their children want and need, why do they purposefully violate that space?

While parents do care, that's why they do it, and "they want what's best for their kids" and whatnot... it doesn't mean they should just come up and stare at your PC. Living without freedom is not "what's best".
If these parents really cared that much, they'd be able to trust you.

well i know it aint easy, but they dont do it to violate your space matey, you know i'll tell you a lil' story, wont take long
on the internet and especially IRC there are a lot of channels visited by young adults and underage ppl, who like to spend time together, i read this article that a lot of those channels frequently get peadophiles in um well i think parents are just trying to make sure you dont get sucked in by one of them
thats about all i could think off, shouldnt have promised me that cookie, mmmmmm looks good

I once foolishly dared to leave the computer to go to the toilet (this is when I lived at home) and came back to find my dad reading the contents of #cnuts.
'ooops'.
Cue lecturing about language etc.
However, he seem strangely pissed off when he left the computer the following day and I started reading his emails. I mean fs, I was only following his example like any good son would do - why can't I get anything right?

I will consult you when I have kids groing up warped. Until then I'd like you to leave my forum, mmk.
Besides, I think it's not probable that I'd have to get physical access to my childrens computers to snarf their mail and check every bit they get in/out. Unless they would use some psycho encryption ofcourse.
In that case I would make tyhem play outside for a week.
