The Logic is simply:

1) Its a local council. They have probably employed an IT Gimp willing to be paid peanuts - who has absolutely no idea what he is doing.

the problem is, they don't actually have a choice, there are certain by laws that state we are not allowed to do certain things, now, stockton may be taking it a bit for, but, i shall check our system when i go back to work on monday, and it will probably be the same, its all to do with the by laws, which the actual library staff have no control over.

ah, but it's not our fault, we have absolutly NO control whatsoever over what is filtered and what isnt, as each library service will interpret the by laws in their own way, i personally agree that it is discriminatory, as probably will most of the front line staff you come across, but our opinions count for nothing, as although we are the once who have to impliment and live with the decisions made from higher up (committy level or however the hell you spell it) as we dont make £40 grand a year, and as our heads arent so far up our own arses, that it would take a tug of war team to pull them out, we are ignored at decision level

thats a tad intolerant, to be quite honest, they shouldnt be banned, but, some of the words that are on those sites pretty much by definition, ie, gay and lesbian, i know for a fact are just banned by our filters, which is a tad unfortunate if you are wanting them for a legitimate use


this reminds me of a time last year, when a student came in and wanted to look at some legal documents on our public access pc's, but she couldn't, as they had some of the banned words in, such as rape and murder
