powerball / gyroscope thingies
There's an old thread somewhere about these (possibly by Vaio?) but I can't find it.
http://www.powerballs.com/ <--- for people who don't know what they are
I bought one today, and I'm crap at it. I just can't get it going. I pull the cord and move my hand around feeling like a idiot as it slows down and stops.
What I'm hoping for are some responses like "yes, that happened to me at first but then I discovered [insert valuable advice]"

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
I bought a powerball almost one year ago. I was like "What the hell am I doing wrong?" the first couple of hundred times. The trick is: Pull the cord and start moving your hand only around in slow circles so you get a nice rythm that can keep going. If you feel the ball starts "jumping" you're doing it wrong. When you master the slow moving, then start increasing the speed little by little till you reach your top-speed and it starts "going crazy". My first record was like 3000rpm, but after MANY tries I got it up at 11000rpm.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
They're ace. My house mate has one.
It's just a knack which is difficult to describe but it involves doing it "against" the motion of the inner ball or something. But once you start, you'll find you never want to stop.
edit : You might also try doing the wanker sign while doing it, that's kind of how it starts. Possibly.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
when you first start make circles your arm from about the elbow to get it going and as it starts to make the hum noise use less and less of a circle until you are spinning it with just wrist action.
it will improve your grip when you get the hang of it, i have one to help with my climbing.
(you can tell when you have the right rhythm as it starts to hum)

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
as it spins faster it is harder to hold on to and thus makes you stronger

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
I've managed to get upto 12,000rpm on the one we have. Although at that point it felt like it was going to break every finger on my right hand.

Yes, it's getting extremely hard to keep on when it gets up in greater speeds. But what don't we do to get a better wank-arm?
Another thing: These balls has been proven to be good against mouse-arms, so to all of you sitting a lot infront of your computer: Get one.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
I have one and I can certainly say it has made a difference to the tell tale signs of RSI (What with me being a IT Deskmonkey) - best 13,032.
The trick is you must only move your wrist in circles and not your arm. Also when the ball gets quicker you have to make smaller circles to get a faster revolution.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
How on earth does it work?
Is it on a string you swing round or what?

You hold it in your hand. Gyroscopes produce a rotational couple (G in the above equation) and it tries to move. You stop it.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
It was me that made the thread, and got 10000 wanker jokes.
They're pretty hard to get the knack off, took me a couple of days but once you get the hang of it they're great.

Re: powerball / gyroscope thingies
Just updating this with an arm that feels like jelly because now I can do it!
I suffered the indignity of seeing a friend do it on her first go, but still couldn't do it with someone to copy from. My progress came firstly from working out which direction to turn it depending on how it was wound up, and secondly from visualising a smaller heavy ball spinning inside it. Daft, but it worked for me. Only 8.5k so far though

Could be useful for repeatedly punching someone in the face without moving your arm

Yeah, but there should be no reason to do this, considering most altercations can be resolved by simply discussing your issues or walking away.
