M25's variable Speed Limit

Genius thing that it is.

Friend of mine got caught doing 81in a '50' zone. (Yes, he's an idiot but still)

Earnt himself a court apponitment.

Anyone know likely outcomes? Is a ban likely/certain? Bloody cameras.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

20mph over the speedlimit "Should" be 6 points, so depends how longs hes been driving/if he has any other points. was it a camera? or was he pulled?

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

Camera.

He's been driving for about ~18 months so i don't think that the '6 points = retake' thing applies. Could be wrong though.

i'm afraid to say the 6 points = retake thing does still apply . However, since it was a camera that he was caught by then there is something he can do. It is my understanding that he has the right to request all the available evidence on him i.e the photo. AND (this one could be quite significant) all the evidence on when that particular camera was calibrated. No doubt Yahwe will be able to clarify this a bit more (and point out anything i've got wrong here)

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

I don't like people who obviously speed and then have the cheek to waste resources by going "well it was miscalibrated".

He would have been speeding, by a not insignificant margin, even if the full speed limit was still in force.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

if hes been driving for 18 months, 6 points = looses his licence and 1 year ban (i think)

but as DD says, he can request all the infomation, and hopefully this could take a few months to come through, by what time he will of hopefully got to 24 months (When he gets an additional 6 points)

I imagine they would take it from when the offence was rather than when the paperwork goes through.

Anyway, going 30 mph over the limit in an area that is bound to have active speed cameras is just plain stupid.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

Speed limit + 10% of speed limit = calibrated camera speed.
In a 50mph zone this would be of course 55mph.

In this instance, the speed limit is 50mph
Breaking this by 10mph is a caution.
Breaking this by 20mph is an instant three points on the licence.
Breaking this by 30mph is a court appearance.

Hence why he has a court appearance.

As DemonDave states, you can slow the process by requesting the evidence, which the police are legally obliged to provide you with. Minor offences, which would result in a caution or perhaps points, they usually won't waste the time. Offences which are of court case standard, they'll most likely give you the evidence with a nice note saying "see you in court."

One word,

Unlucky.

Actual thoughts,

Haha.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

oddly enough on my way back from Gatwick i joined the M25 clockwise and was doing 85 because some moron was tailgaiting me so i wajnted to get past a car in the middle lane and pull over. however i went under the very first bridge with little dotted lines after it. i looked back and there were funny boxes on the top of it. NOW ....
im not 100% sure that they are operational unless theres a 50mph sign on the bridge (like in the case of your mate - unless he was caught by a roadside camera)

or even if these things on the bridges looking backwards are even cameras and not just traffic sensors.

anyone care to enlighten me?

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

My friend was caught by one of the flourescent yellow jobbies located within those abundance of roadworks from the M3 -> M4 and slightly beyond.

I'm fairly sure those cameras on bridges and the dotted lines associated with them are just for show as if they're not i would've received many a ticket by now. I ususally just fly through them without thinking about it.

I always thought there was some law about cameras always being visible or somesuch?

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

Also the cameras are aimed at a certain lane, usually not the emergency lane, so if you do 140-150 mph over an emergency lane to the leftside (for you brits, for the rest, right side) of the road should be 'okay'.

However if you get caught you probably face heavy, heavy charges. Reckless driving and all that, while I say it is very, very calculating.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

i was told that having a fake numberplate e.g. 'JAMES' on my car (pretending to be private) carried a 20 quid fine if stopped by the cops.

and if you have a nice car you can usually blag a 'oh i am sorry officer it was being photographed' or whatnot at a show.

true story.

Re: M25's variable Speed Limit

yeah i've been thinking about that too, but then you need a variety of numberplates. I've got contacts with some people of 'the law' and some people are getting 'notorious'.

So if there is a red VW polo getting constantly flashed by a Gatso with the numberplate 'James' on it, it is very likely that they will try and 'catch' you so they will be 'on the lookout' for any 'red VW polo'.

A similar story is about a guy who rode a motorbike, constantly through the gatso-loop getting flashed with 100-120 MPH where 50 is allowed. However he would have his foot over his licenseplate and he would usually flash the cam. One day he forgot (or was too late with) his foot. Found out it was a police officer in training. By then he had about 160 pictures of him taken, as he rode that route day in, day out.
