I run FreeBSD 4.7 and it rocks... apart from a strange and serious error...

I know you pretty well idi, and I assume you want some kind of machine to mess about with.
Gentoo is ideal for what you want.

I'm actually about to try Linux From Scratch in an attempt to learn more about the internals and what works with what. Getting a system that hasn't been tweaked, altered, and generally buggered about with by Redhat is just an extra bonus

It's got an installer though
I want to build it from source by hand step by painful step. That way I'll know 10 times as much about linux by the time I've finished

Rh8 is nice for beginners if i found a few little things needed tweaking - e.g. the media player so it'd play MP3s
I'm currently looking into Gentoo ( www.gentoo.org) - thats a compiled from scratch system, optimised for your PC, but very easy to maintain thanks to the Portage system.
e.g. to install Apache
"emerge apache"
the portage system will calculate dependencies and install it all.
Thats my 2 pence

my choice is debian.
and a simple and plain
apt-get apache
brings you as far as
emerge apache

Debian > *.
I do however wish to try something like gentoo or LFS.
I also wish for Gnome2 to be in Stable so I don't have to do it manually.

just add
to your sources.list, make an atp-get upgrade,
apt-get install gnome gdm2 and you've got it.

Well, OK.
I overreacted.
Sorry for that.
Basically i only wanted to show that getting Gnome2 on a Debian PC is fairly easy.

And he showed his appreciation for it. I am totally mystified as to where you got the idea it was sarcastic.

Give me one good reason why you want to put, on a games console, the operating system with pretty much the worst support for games?
What's the point?
I can see why it was done originally - just to carry on the ever-present "l33t hax0rs vs. micro$oft" war, but there is no value in doing it now.

cos for £140 you have a powerfull 800mhz server that will play mp3s and divx on your tv... not to mention the fact that it will still play all the xbox games, and debian is free..

its 700 Mhz, but yeah, and most xbox's have an extra 2Gig that the original operating OS cant access, so why not put something intresting on it?
