Best PC games ever?
I was just wondering what you thought were the best PC games by genre. Here's some of my thoughts:
RPG:
Fallout 2. The fact that there are a number of ways to complete every quest and that you can act good or bad or somewhere in between makes this a great game. The SPECIAL system of character creation is genius and the fact that your actions affect the end-game is great too, imo no RPG has come close to topping it. Fallout was good too but Fallout 2 is superior.
Strategy:
Rise of Nations. The huge scope, highly detailed tech advancement and the fact that the resources do not deplete over time make for a great game. I played this game pretty much non-stop for a year and while I'm bored of it now I still acknowledge that it's a great game. I'm really looking forward to see what they do with the sequel.
FPS:
Half Life. I haven't played many FPSes since Half Life but none even come close to conveying the atmosphere and story as well as this game does. Half Life 2 was a notable dissapointment.
There are many other genres but I can't be arsed thinking of contenders for them The 3 genres above are the ones I play most anyway.
Also, X-Com is worthy of a mention, a great game. The sequels and remake didn't quite capture the magic of the first. I wouldn't know what genre to classify it as though.

Re: Best PC games ever?
X-Com is turned based strategy, the first two were pretty good, I can't really see how you can separate them since they were essentially the same game.
For me anyway there's too many games I've enjoyed to pick a favourite in any genre really.

RPG: Diablo. This game has the flow.
Strategy: Jagged Alliance 2. best RBSG ever. superb scenario, lovely mercaneries, lots of long-time fun (additionally many mods outhere )
FPS: No One Lives Forever. nice story, terrific scenario, hot protagonist, lots of comedy events.

It terms of the number of hours i've spent playing a game over the years the Championship Manager series wins by a long long way. Probably CM 2, 3 or 02/03 was my favourite, i forget which is which but i didnt like CM4.

CM is awsome but does seem to be going ott in detail. there should be a setting where you pick the level of complication so 'casual' players and total obsessives can pick their preferred level of detail.
RPG: Broken Sword 2. Solid. First RPG I've ever completed. Not really played too many but I really enjoyed this
Strategy: Command And Conquer. What else? All are great (with the exception of tiberian sun) but I think Red Alert is the best. If ou are looking for a challenge I would recommend the original with the extra missions disk as most of those are insanely difficult.
FPS: AvP. Great game Some levels are very jumpy, especially the levels with face huggers. three different ways to play (Alien, Predator, Marine) and each character has it's strenths and weaknesses but the Predator is clearly the best character.

Strategy: Red Alert or Red Alert 2, both are classics.
Sport: The CM/FM series
RPG: Diablo 2, out of my limited experience.
Overall prize: Planetarion, for taking so much time out of my life. I know most of you don't play anymore, but think about how addicted you were back when you did.

I was going to say "First person to mention a console game loses" in my first post but I was hoping against hope that nobody would mention a console game. Oh how vain that hope was!
I didn't think of saying don't mention movies though

Monkey Island 1 will probably be my #1. It's old and got sucky graphics, but god damn it were cool when it first came + I still like it. The original Indiana Jones and Prince of Persia is also good.

you have super street fighter 2 and mortal kombat 2 representing the whole genre of beatemups...
Super street fighter 2 turbo is clearly the best of those, and certainly the "classic" that most people will think of.
mortal kombat 2, while it can be a lot of fun, is simply NOT a very good game. In fact the whole MK series is a bit of a joke.
now, tekken 3, THERE is a true classic.

Re: Best PC games ever?
RPG; Diablo , KOTOR, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Strategy; Hearts of Iron, Master Of Orion, Ascendancy, Alpha Centauri
FPS; Quake.
Other: Tekken III
I'm fairly old school and find less and less new games which I actually enjoy. Most the games I've played on consoles I've found to be extremely overrated.

Only a maximum of half of the Tekken games are any good though; that's 3, Tag and (maybe) 5.
1, 2 and 4 are all abysmal. 1 and 2 especially, which play at 3 frames per second.

i think 1 and 2 can probably be excused, considering T1 came out over 10 years ago now and t2 followed closely. There really werent any decent 3d beat em ups until T3 and vf(whichever one was the first good one i dont play vf).
Whereas i believe all the SC games came out after T3, including soul edge.
Although yes, T4 was awful, but we pretend that didnt happen.
