what is wrong with our society?
When something as simple as water can have a brand name stamped on the bottle and cost loads?

Re: what is wrong with our society?
I personally don't like tap water. In Stockton-on-San-Joaquin it has a strange, chemical after-taste. I almost always drink something with bubbles in it or coffee or tea. Surprisingly, I have read an article or two that have said that the bacteria levels in many of the bottle waters on the market are worse than what comes out of the tap.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
Some tap water is revolting - for example I have never drunk water from the tap in Glasgow - it leaves an awful taste in your mouth. Maybe it's just not what I'm used to. Anyway bottled water is a convenience thing more than anything - I'm not going to carry the kitchen sink on my back when I'm wandering around the shops on a hot day, nor am I going to take it on the train with me.

Bottled water should come free with compulsory temporary tattoos that say "fanny" that should be imprinted on your forehead. They should wear off after 2 or 3 days, or however long it takes for you to learn your lesson.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
if you want to buy bottled water - which i do, with some frequency, because i dislike coke and its ilk and dont have space on my person to carry these things around - you accept what it costs because you always have the perfectly healthy and acceptable option of tap water.
So in conclusion stop complaining you twat.

If you are willing to pay £0.80 +++ for a bottle with water in it, you deserve everything you get, and lose the right for life to complain about being poor etc

it's not the material worth you're paying for. you don't buy bottled water to drink at home.
you're paying for the fact that the water is right there, in a bottle, in your hand, when you would like it to be there, and not before.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
its not the fact that you can buy bottled water thats the problem, own brands (tescos sainsburies etc) aren't too bad, its things like evian, that charge a bloody fortune for the same product that bothers me.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
It just seems wrong that something like water can be sold to idiots for an inflated price just because it has a different sticker on the bottle. With some things, like coke, the different brands taste different, but with water there is absolutely no difference.
It just seems a bit strange to me.

I disagree there, I can generally notice a different in taste between different brands of water just like I find the water in houses a street over taste different to the water in my house.
As for buying bottled water, here they called Brecon Water for half the price of coke so I often buy it just for something different.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
It is noted purely to be a convenience thing. With the exception of a few ( and I do mean very very few), the water in the bottles comes from the same supply as your tap water, but the company run it through an extra filtering process.
Some places I can understand though given they have poor quality water from their home tap. I am lucky in that my town is noted to have some of the best tap water in the world.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
Yes, water most definately has a taste, and it differs as per chemical makeup of the water. This is a primary reason I am unable to drink water straight.
I don't know what the Belgium water consists of, but I do know that tap water taken from near the Murray River is by far the worst I have ever seen. When the glass of water you poured from the tap is visibly brown/yellow, and has sediment in it you would hardly qualify it for drinking. Yet the unassuming people of Murray River drink this shit, even though it leaves kitchen sinks and baths stained a yellow colour.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
In Portsmouth water in a bottle is a lot nicer than tap water. Coupled with the fact that I started drinking cold water instead of coke and stuff, and it helped me lose nearly a stone in weight, I personally feel that the cost of water is negliable.
Apart from that, its my choice. It doesn't make me an idiot, it makes me different.
Lots of people do things that are different to me, and that makes them different, not stupid in some way.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
(Pure) water has no taste.
The minerals/bacteria/whatever are normally in low amounts and thus good for your immunity levels. If you dont like the taste of water, add some squash.
And those people who only bath their dogs in 'Evian' or whatever the label is on, need to be shot.

Re: what is wrong with our society?
I find if I drink too much of any drink it starts to taste disgusting. I'm not sure why.
Water's taste does vary from place but I always enjoy London tap-water over anything else. It may be the fluoride, I'm not sure.
On bottled water : Obviously no-one is forcing you to drink the stuff but that isn't the issue. My concern is that it's mismarketed and that a lot of people unconsciously drift towards wasting money on products they have no real need for. This is their choice of course, but it means that collectively large amounts of money is spent transporting a commodity in trucks, etc when there is a perfectly good pipe network in most areas.
I seem to remember when I was a child there were more public water fountains (generally maintained by the local authority) around. My memory may be faulty but I remember if you were out and about (in a park for instance) you'd go and have a drink from one of those, not go to a shop. In fact, I don't think I met anyone who drank bottled water until I met T&F when I started secondary school.
p.s. evian backwards spells....

Because, as has been said many times, convenience. Also, people complaining you're purely being ripped off paying for bottled water, think how much the actual liquid in a bottle of coke costs - less than 1p (I think!)

You cant just turn on a tap in your home and fill up a bottle with coke. You can with water, and for a lot less than you can buy in the shops.

To 'the topic', the only time I buy bottled water is when I'm either
a) Travelling, and don't want something sickly like Coke
b) Working (like, at work, not studying)
I don't buy it because it tastes better than regular water, I don't buy it because I think it's better for me than Coke, I buy it because it's a convenient method of hydrating myself when I'm out that doesn't involve me taking a drink with me. I would be surprised if most consumers of the stuff bought it for staggeringly different reasons.

Yeah it's generally nice around these parts, apart from city centre Dublin maybe. Then it starts getting a little bit iffy-er.
What was that bottled water stuff they had to pull in the UK after it emerged it was nothing but tap water. And infected tap water at that.
Was coca-cola's little venture was it not?

First, Coca-Cola's new brand of "pure" bottled water, Dasani, was revealed earlier this month to be tap water taken from the mains. Then it emerged that what the firm described as its "highly sophisticated purification process", based on Nasa spacecraft technology, was in fact reverse osmosis used in many modest domestic water purification units.
Just when executives in charge of a £7m marketing push for the product must have felt it could get no worse, it did precisely that. The entire UK supply of Dasani was pulled off the shelves because it has been contaminated with bromate, a cancer-causing chemical.

Oh those crazy marketing bastards.
