Re: About Round 11
It was actually a very difficult decision to make, which i will readily admit as i was one of the people making the decisions.
We had to weigh up rushing "round11" the new game and its new features, and possibly severaly screwing up in the process, against running something in the interim to keep people interested.
The later was the final decision.
We have however still tried to accomodate by adding in to the new PAX-Rnd11 a number of features i announced some time ago.. ofc that means we have now had to add even more features for PAv3..

Then shouldn't the next round be 10.75?

Pretty much, although Spinner did state why R11 was more suitable than 10.75

Can we get rid of the ridiculous decimal round names?
This is not round 10.5 This is round 11. Alliances are playing, people are dealing, there is nothing in this round that makes it "illegitimate."

We're already playing round 12 if you want to get rid of non-integer rounds completely
The idea, I believe, is that .5 rounds are shorter. 2 months rather than 4. So... which will round 11 be?

Hypertext Pre-Processor.
It's basically a server-side scripting language like Perl and CGI, only a bit simpler.

It's better for PA in the long run, because it is easier to maintain, as more people know how it works and how to code in it. The current code is in modPerl.

Pedantically, it stands for PHP Hypertext Pre-processor (GNU naming conventions and all...)

so PHP stands for PHP Hypertext Pre-processor?
but PHP = PHP Hypertext Pre-processor.
so you end up with PHP = PHP (Hypertext Pre-processor)^n ? :/

I think it's a couple of weeks after this one finishes or something. I wouldn't bet on it being more than a month unless Spinner somehow completely breaks/looses the code, which isn't too likely

Heh. What i think was interesting was that the article said that Spinner was going to contact me and ask me to do some ship stats. The wierd thing is that a) i wasnt asked to do it before it became public, and b) i still havent been contacted
Perhaps the article is all bollox?

Re: About Round 11
R11 will still be coded in Perl.
Planetarion v3 is already being worked on by a team of PHP-coders. I am not sure whether they are still looking for any, but if you want to apply, it'd likely better to contact Karmulian than hope someone is going to contact you.

Re: About Round 11
Hello everyone!
I am in the middle of the development on rnd 11, and we certainly assume it will be ready just after rnd 10.5 is finished. Which means some simple beta's are just around the corner.
It is quite correct Ultimate Newbie, I have not contacted you yet, but if you are willing to lend a hand, we did talk about it just before easter (-:
You'll find an email waiting for you in a couple of days
I hope the added tactics and ships will produce some interesting results, and I am looking forward to getting it on the road.
Dont apply for beta testing yet pls, all will be announced in good time.

Re: About Round 11
you're starting round 11 at the end of May?!
typical PAteam. they have this knack of every year starting a round in the middle of exam seasons. and they wonder why people don't sign up (when most players are of the age where we are doing exams...)

You'll notice though that we have cunningly (OK, it was possibly accidentally cos timetables weren't issued at that point) scheduled r10.5 to end before the exam period starts.
We will look closely at the date that r11 will start when we get to that stage

If you don't have a start date for R11 then why are you setting an end date for R10.5??? Let the current round continue until the next one is ready (or at least schedule some speedrounds or a reset).
We've been down this road too many times before and unfortunately it rarely seems to end well: extended havoc, truncated beta, and another round that's been rushed into production.

Re: About Round 11
The round end date was decided at the start of the round, so that it would be well known that this round was going to be a 2 month long insert between round 10 and round 11. Spinner has posted a progress update about round 11 on the portal:
Quote:

I assume most people have read the article about next round in our newsletter by now, if not, http://news.planetarion.com is the place to go.
I am currently finishing up implementing the new ships with individual traveltime etc, making it all work in scans, combat reports and the production page etc etc.
In a few days, I will get someone to assist me with some stats on the ships, as most of them have to be redone as the balance shifts both here and there by adding new ships, and specially by adding secondary pods.
I will also need some help with naming the new ships, which is something we will do when the beta starts.
I will try to keep you all informed of the progress as it happens.
Cyas!
|
When I said that we needed to look closely at the date, I did not mean that we had no idea when the round would begin. We'll look at the date to try and minimise problems caused by exams etc and announce the actual date closer to the time.

Re: About Round 11
makes a change A2, good to hear it last 2 summers had PA rounds (7 and 9.5 i think) starting in exam periods. Round 9.5 was fine for me, fortunately, as my exams ended for some reason a full week before many people's, and the round started i think the day of my last exam

Re: About Round 11
Will there be any additional anti-blocking measures in round 11?
If the answer is random gals, then that's just not enough. I would like to know if we get random gals, even though the anouncement implies it will be priv gals again.
edit: I forgot about vacation mode as an anti-blocking measure... Well that's still not enough, by the time people use this it's already too late.

Re: About Round 11
Are we going to see the return of cargo ships, they made the game much more interesting because you could attack someone and know that you would have enough resources to rebuild or enharce your fleet. I remember attacking planets just for resouces!
I'd also like to see a better tech tree in this version, the fact that you would get different ships and be unable to get others depending on what you reserched was a good feature.
I've only just started playing PA again after 1.5 years off and i am using a free account so if i'm talking rubish and these features are in the paid for version just ignore me but those two things are what i think makes this version a little boaring.

A private round, will lead 100% to blocking again. Imho a random round is the only playable version of R11
