He lived n a house, a very big house
In manchester, with 3 other student types.
well, its not going to be that big. But me and my future housemates are looking at real estate today and the rest of this week. Having left it a bit late some of our first choices were already taken however
anyway, anyone have some sagely advice regarding viewing houses, any terrible pitfalls to avoid (chances are all the places are going to be holes anyway, despite what it says on the descriptions).

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
Similar thing here. Me and my 5 future housemates made it public were sharing together today (not to the pleasure of some). We're having to put down 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th choices though, and thing is, theres only 3 on campus options and we dont want to leave campus.
Its going to be great. If it all goes to plan

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
yeah, we are going to fallowfield as well. And yeah, they will all be gone, you shall have to decide sharpish matey. Despite all the great people i have been living with this year, the decision was made easier for me not by thinking who i would most like to live with, but those who i could not imagine myself living without. (aaah)

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
my boss suggested that bonnie and i buy a house instead of rent one.
i was like 'dude.. we're not a 'couple' and i'm not interested in buying a house with someone i'm not going to be living with for a long time'

I have no job, little money and no aspirations in life. Living by myself is just after catching a particularly virulent strain of syphilis on my list of priorities.

Hey, if you decide to keep mules as pets, would that mean you'd be living in an ass-hole?

The only pitfall I can suggest you might want to avoid is getting a property which is excessively cold.

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
oh yeah, take your contract to the uni accommodation office and get them to look over it with you, they did this for one of my friends, spent a good couple of hours with him too. his contract had clauses that apparently allowed the landord to come into the house and remoe/destroy anything he didnt like, and allowed him to come in without making an appointment. the accommodation office told him to query those particular ones

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
Most tenancy agreements are fairly easy to read, but yes this is a good idea. The CAB will also do this for you, although if you have any basic tenancy questions once you've got the document give me a PM.

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
If you find out your landlords name is Mrs or Miss Dillon dont do it! she is an evil pain in the arse who will not do any repairs and will think its ok to call 2 mins before turning up on your doorstep with people to view the flat when it comes round to next January (and will then moan at you if it isnt pristinely tidy). And cause the houses are so grotty people will be viewing them for a long time until someone gets desperate enough for a house they will take it.
(Yes, this is Manchester, and indeed fallowfield, specific)
Brighton Grove is a nice road to live on.
and clarence - you at MGS?

Re: He lived n a house, a very big house
oi
thats MY crappy uni you are talking about (yes it is crap though).
thanks for your advice everyone. Anyway, a situation has come up, one of my current hall-mates who isnt living with me next year says she has an agreement with a landlady on a house we are going to see on friday, apparently she says they will be ready to give their deposits on monday.
now, we are going to see this house on friday, unless they cancel our appointment, and here is hoping they won't. IF we put our deposits down on that day, there is no legal way that anyone else can have a claim on our property. Basically, isnt it the first people to put down the deposit and sign th contract who will get the house?
by the way, this girl isnt very nice. There is someone else from my halls who i quite like moving in with her, but she did say she would rather move in with her than us, so its her own fault if things actually DO end up going our way
(this is all assuming this house is any good)

revolution bars are terribly expensive, although we do have most of the pint glasses in our kitchen from there when we went on the 1st night here.
