Was given a leaflet from a protester today...
...entitled 'Stop Bush,' well I'm not a big fan of pubic hair myself but it goes a bit far to protest against it, don't you reckon?

Re: Was given a leaflet from a protester today...
There were student hippies campaigning against the unilateral support of Israel by the US, and calling us to boycott Israeli products.
This might be rather hard, as you'd have to find some Israeli products to boycott first.

A common one is lectures by Israeli professors, although that's been criticised by some on the left.

Given that they were canvassing shoppers, I don't think that's quite what they meant.

What I hate about student hippies is that they think people actually pay attention to them, whereas in reality absolutely everyone ignores students (thank god).

Everyone ignores hippies anyway, whether or not they're students.
Vice versa is also true.

Since at least one person in the world paid enough attention to make this thread, I think "everyone" is a little strong.

Re: Was given a leaflet from a protester today...
Some guy was stood outside the gate blocking my entrance into college and gave me a 'Stop Bush' leaflet.
But he just said 'stop bush' in the least enthusiastic voice ever. Maybe he realised noone gave a **** when he saw a huge pile of scrunched up paper a few metres up the path.
I hope they were using recycled paper, or I might start a 'stop waste' protest against those faggots.

I think private sector companies sending advertising circulars and the like might use a little more paper than some protestors. You know, maybe.

Those adverts aren't a message saying 'stop this evil' though. What if I think wasting paper is evil? What then?

I always worry about those cartons which have "we plant trees faster than we cut them so it's alright to buy our product and you're not supporting deforestation". I mean why are they planting more trees? I don't want some ****ing hippy coming along and planting a giant redwood in my front garden, I ****ing like my view of endless housing estates and factories.

It's pretty funny how much fuss is being made over this while Robert Mugabe (shut up mark) visited france earlier this year with not that much international outrage.

True, but Mugabe is President of an African backwater, and Bush is President of teh US.
Also, Mugabe is black, and makes anti-imperialist noises. Hence he is not going to come under such sustained attack by half of these people because of it, even if he does have a tendency to arbitrarily shoot people.

The end part about mentioning the arbitrary shootings in passing was meant to be humourous.

Re: Was given a leaflet from a protester today...
Baldrick: No, the thing is: The way I see it, these days there's a war on, right? and, ages ago, there wasn't a war on, right? So, there must have been a moment when there not being a war on went away, right? and there being a war on came along. So, what I want to know is: How did we get from the one case of affairs to the other case of affairs?
Edmund: Do you mean "How did the war start?"
Baldrick: Yeah.
George: The war started because of the vile Hun and his villainous empire- building.
Edmund: George, the British Empire at present covers a quarter of the globe, while the German Empire consists of a small sausage factory in Tanganyika. I hardly think that we can be entirely absolved of blame on the imperialistic front.
George: Oh, no, sir, absolutely not. (aside, to Baldick) Mad as a bicycle!
Baldrick: I heard that it started when a bloke called Archie Duke shot an ostrich 'cause he was hungry.
Edmund: I think you mean it started when the Archduke of Austro-Hungary got shot.
Baldrick: Nah, there was definitely an ostrich involved, sir.
Edmund: Well, possibly. But the real reason for the whole thing was that it was too much effort *not* to have a war.
George: By God this is interesting; I always loved history -- The Battle of Hastings, Henry VIII and his six knives, all that.
Edmund: You see, Baldrick, in order to prevent war in Europe, two superblocs developed: us, the French and the Russians on one side, and the Germans and Austro-Hungary on the other. The idea was to have two vast opposing armies, each acting as the other's deterrent. That way there could never be a war.
Baldrick: But this is a sort of a war, isn't it, sir?
Edmund: Yes, that's right. You see, there was a tiny flaw in the plan.
George: What was that, sir?
Edmund: It was bollocks.
For good measure.

yes, but they are terrible at it, and they never ever achieve anything at the meetings.
the college JCRs do the actual work of a union. since everyone deals directly with their colleges and departments, i don't know why we even have a student union (not to be confused with the Cambridge Union, a debating club for young Tories).

It's alright.
it also leafletted freshers without bothering to distinguish itself from the student union, collected their money, and tried to keep it. (this story is true, despite appearing in Varsity)

If you get into Cambridge and can't tell the difference between "Cambridge Union" and "Cambridge University Students' Union" then you deserve to lose your money.
(And I read that leaflet, and it was blatently obvious that it wasn't the Students' Union.)

According to our student handbook, student unions are requried by law to be non-political. I'm not sure how that would be enforced though.

I have a Jewish lecturer who likes to pretend he's American. He looks like Professor Snape.
He talks about 'buzz-groups.'
