Re: The UT2K4 Demo
It seems exactly the same as UT2K3, only with a few more flashing lights and maps.
Not that this is a bad thing of course, since once you have a good idea, moderately refining it seems to be a be far better idea than the ID paradigm of completely changing everything for the sole sake of 'making it new' and ruining the game in the process.

Re: The UT2K4 Demo
Well, it's pretty much the same (which is no bad thing; UT2K3 is superb), except for
a. The assault mode is back (I thought it was a mistake leaving it out of 2k3)
and
b. Vehicles. (Mostly in the 'Onslaught' mode, which is a capture the base jobby like BF1942, but good)
Oh, and nod, it has a weapon called the 'avril'.

yes, assault mode returning is very much appreciated by myself
onslaught is odd but fun. its annoying tho how if you`re the first into a vehicle , you`re driving it , and cant jump on as a turret only person :/

Well, it makes sense in a way, but that's only really applicable for the Hellfire; everything else is either single man or has a good driver gun :coolio:

The mode where you have to capture objectives between moving vehicles is cool too.

(What's the point of secondary fire on that little just-above-ground floaty dealy?)
And there's a third weapon space on the big tank and the humvee styled dealy I only just noticed =(

You can squish people with it.
The Hellbender is the best thing ever, the side turret especially, because if you detonate ONE of the balls of death, they ALL detonate, ADSM styleee.

I didn't like any Quake game after Quake 1. And Counterstrike has ruined most other FPS for me now. They all seem distinctly rubbish and vaguely silly after playing CS.
I also like Desperado or whatever that Lucasarts western game was.

The lightgun styled thing on the hellbender is much more amusing. A shot and a bit will take down the flying dealy and the floating dealy, and if you just tap it you can roll scorpions and hellbenders over in an amusing manner. Plus if you fully charge it and shoot a 'dude' they explode \o/

If your answer includes something silly like later versions being unbalanced or too many idiots playing the game then you've officially lost.
p.s. You and Deffeh should form an alliance of people who irrationally dislike things which are good, if overrated (CS, the Matrix, etc).

slow gameplay, inaccurate crosshairs, no "free-flowing gameplay" (ie. sit and wait after you have been shot). not to mention the community is basically ruined by scriptkiddies.
CS is also the spawn of Action Quake and hence should be shot in the face for trying to be better than quake.

I don't think you can judge a game by it's community (in this context). Whereas a game like Planetarion is pretty much determined by it's community, you can quite easily play CS in a LAN type environment (and that's where my fondest memories of the game come from), so I can ignore that one.
Slow gameplay? I'd consider it vaguely more tactical. The stupid pace of most FPS seems to be suited for ADD suffers (OMG lazers!) who will bore if there isn't an explosion every ten seconds. There is a place for action like that ocassionally (and I've had some fun playing Quake and Unreal Tournament, again, in a LAN environment).
The free-flowing gameplay is another ADD point. Having to wait for about 2 minutes for the next round is hardly a major imposition.
edit : Oh, and I never found any major problem with the crosshairs.

Re: The UT2K4 Demo
CS was mediocre. It was more or less one hit kill but in a battle it was the first person to get a lucky shot that won.

Only with players/teams of equal skill. If a more skilled player plays a less skilled one the more skilled player will win a very large proportion of the time, which would seem to indicate a not particularly luck-based game.

It's not particularly well coded, and it's not all that fun to play.
Plus ping = winner (almost always, especially given the weapons are more accurate at lower ping (that's ignoring server lag; the fire is more concentrated), and none of them are AoE), but that comes under coding, really.

Aye, this is also a large part why I don't like CS or half-life in general for that matter. It's kinda a game engine trying so hard to be vain it missed the important fun factor inherent in Quake.

the less skilled one tends to sit behind a box and shoot people in the back.
also, with the ability to kill someone after a single sprayed-headshot, horay for jesus.
They should insert a railgun and make bunnyhopping mandatory

Re: The UT2K4 Demo
CS is terrible game; its even slower-paced than settlers 2 and was probably designed for those who lacked the reaction speed to play real FPS games. Even quake 2 was faster for **** sake.
No post-quakeworld FPS games have been particularly good, but UT is the best of a bad bunch by far. If they fixed the problem that it simply doesnt 'feel' satisfying when you kill someone, added better maps, make half of the weapons inferior and added 'higher skill level' features like bunny hopping, theyd actually have a pretty good game on their hands.

Re: The UT2K4 Demo
I haven't read any of this thread, all I have seen is that it's bout the new Unreal Tournament and that Nod has replied.
I hereby predict that Nod is saying that
"there is too much attention paid to the graphical interfaces and not enough to the simplistic gameplay aspect of first person shooters that culminated in QuakeWorld and Quake 2. All games development should have stopped at this point as there is no way these games could be improved upon and don't try and argue because I've made the same argument time and time again on these boards, without deviating one single tiny bit from my original standpoint and I'm right because I AM the Internet and this is proven by the fact that mains wires are a sort of red colour which matches my stupid tufty ginger barnet"
So, lets see how I did....
