Tidying
Having not really seen many actual working "desks" of the people here, I can't really say how applicable it is to the rest of you, but I'm having a strange time clearing off mine. I keep on finding bits of paper with cryptic messages like "rho omega r . r dr d theta" written on them, with little explanation of their origin.
Other interesting tit-bits include an (empty) packet of Blu Tack, a Part 1A Physics practical book from 2002, a pack of playing cards from a port house and a DVI cable.
Do you chaps gather curios in this rather hap-hazard fashion, or is it my rather eccentric "filing" system that's to blame?

Re: Tidying
It probably has something to do with the "filing", but since I operate under a similar system when I had to leave uni last week I found a lot of crazy (probably physics related) bits of paper with similarly confounding messages.

I expect to have a lot of notes lying around, and sketches of proplem answers, but when it's just one expression in the middle of a page, I begin to think that some higher power is afoot.

Re: Tidying
I think they are either messages from the gods or some attempt at working out the solution of a problem that you got bored of, or something you really thought you needed to remember?

Re: Tidying
mine is like that too. I have all sorts of things here.... let me look. I have a curiously bent paperclip, which I don't rcall ever having seen before, five empty envelopes with various geometrical shapes and bits of c++ written on them, my mouse mat is a piece of paper that has an interesting calculation regarding the approximate length of time required in order for the active site of an enzyme to converge to the same sequence as a dissimilar enzyme, something that looks like I was doing a fluid dynamics calculation, and aah, my glasses cleaner. I have been looking for that for ages. thankyou.

Re: Tidying
I have given up on hand written notes, they are useless. E-mails to myself are the way forward. Pens are only for eating.
My home desk is now relatively clean (I borrowed a monitor off someone so had to clean it off). My work desk was tidied a few days ago (i.e. I threw everything on the floor and/or in the draws). It now has a shiny new HP USB flatbed scanner. So far four people have asked whether it's a George Foreman grill. They all thought they were being hilarious. The next one who says something similar is having their ****ing neck snapped.
Aside from this I have my phone, my PDA (or two of them) and four or five stock condition survey folders which I should be giving to some minion to type up.

Re: Tidying
you now have a phone?
All my notes go in a big pad of paper... although my work desk does tend to get covered in little yellow sticky bits of paper things from other people.
When I moved rooms at uni i found boxes full of random bits of paper with scribblings all over them which i'd carefully filed in case they were useful at a later date...
Currently my desk at home is covered with receipts from every time i empty my wallet...

Mathematics over a computer system is a nightmarish procedure, and is, in essence, the sole reason I used a pen between summer 2002 and earlier this term, when I had an essay to write.
[edit]
Next random piece of paper: a before/after diagram of a collision in the ZMF, with the speed "0.144c" scrawled beneath.

The only thing I need to really keep that's WoW related is the output of /attendance, the drops and maybe the signups if I need to figure out teamsheets. Notepad does this fine.

Unfortunately I don't do enough work to even require a desk, never mind clutter it up.

Re: Tidying
My desk at home is relatively clean (I think) as I tidied it before I came back to uni. In my uni house my desk is the living room table as that's where the net is situated. It contains:
tv remote, large 'how you doin'' Friends mug, fork, couple of dirty plates, some crushed pringles, NME, tobacco, Nightmare Before Christmas DVD box, last bits of a huge Aero Irish cream bar (which someone else bought but only I like), my mobile phone, portable CD player, ashtray, several lighters (one of which works), some randm letters to people who don't live here anymore (most are about human testing), a chrsitmas card, a toilet roll (I've no idea why) and a shiny red apple.

Re: Tidying
I haven't seen my office desk in about a month, so there could be several feet of unopened mail sitting on it for all I know.
Home desk is kept clean and tidy, since I'm not there long enough to get it messy, but there should be a couple of letters from the IR asking if I'm ever going to file a return.

Re: Tidying
I really need to clean my desk.
And my room come to think of it.
I'll only get moaned at. Although curiously my fiance saying, 'Tidy your room', has more of an effect that it ever used to when my mum said it.

my bed is currently in that state when i had to find my dry cleaning ticket. I didn't find it though
My desk is currently covered in months of post that may or may not need sorting, a DVD from the Royal Signals Corps, my old Nokia 3210 and charger, my advent calander (which i've not opened for today yet... now i have) and varios other bits and pieces of paper that have been "filed" (i.e. moved from one place and placed on the pile on the desk)
Needless to say, I never use my desk. But if i want to use my desktop, I may have to clear my desk off

Re: Tidying
I use mine too often so generally keep it quite clean. All that is on it are a pile of christmas cards, a few scews, calculator, drinks and pringles. Usually I have a big pile of receipts and cash point slips as well but they were tidied away last night.
Any paper I make notes on either gets stuffed in the folder with the work it was for or thrown away straight away. Anything I need to keep I just email myself nowadays.

Re: Tidying
My desk is in the room nearest the front door, which means everyone who comes in leaves something on it. So I have keys of various sorts, flyers, swipe cards, empty packets from the local chemist, a baording pass stub from a Ryanair flight to Murcia, a copper heatsink for a 6800GT, a signed photo of Lucy Pinder and a series of rubber bands in various colours and sizes.

Theres a glove puppet of Scamp from the Sooty and Sweep show in the drawer ive just inherited. Its green in places, and im not quite sure if thats marker pen or mould.
I wanted to throw it out, but the females on the team assure me its their only reminder of a previous member of staff that they really liked. Hence it now occupies a corner of said females desks.

Re: Tidying
I have all sorts of things over my desk at uni usually. CD cases for cds that are in / on my pc / laptop, books (to hold laptop off desk and allow airflow), old crockery (on laptop when laptop is turned off), deoderant, electric razor, phone charger, often nail clippers (don't know why?) post it notes + random bits of paper with planetarion / maths / shopping lists on them (i file most of my maths stuff in a pile on the floor before sorting it into my folder before the pages start to disintegrate). On the shelf beside it I fit anything that might be helpful that I haven't got room for on my desk - cds, cable ties, kitchen paper (I spill my meals when I eat them sometimes, I have too much gravy), cd player with no headphones, tippex, until recently lots of random lengths of patch / crossover / modem -> phone cables and the end of the reel of patch cable, an old PSU that broke / isn't high enough wattage to put in most pcs, a pencil case, ends for patch cables ...
I can't think of anything else
good fun though

I'm anal, i colour code everything, label plugs, cant sleep in a messy room, file away things to such an extent that i never find or use them - id rather have something that use it - just in case i need it. Yes, i know. I spend several hours a week trying to reorganise everything i own into a slightly more efficient order.
