Just a random thing
Looking at some property type things im struck by the fact that the people who write blurbs appear not to have English as a first language.
For instance:
John Marley is delighted to welcome to the market this large and very spacious 3 bedroom tenement flat. The property requires upgrading and modernisation, but there is a wealth of potential in this property. There are 2 large double bedrooms, large kitchen/diner and the lounge is 21' long! Two storage cupboards in the large hall area, double glazing and gas central heating all benefit the property. Situated in the popular area of Dennistoun, this flat is close to all local ammenities and gives easy access to the town centre. For further details contact John Marley on BLAH
Anyways just thought i'd mention it.

Very , Very poor.
PS : Dace , are those spelling mistakes from the article, or did you make them yourself?

Re: Just a random thing
I'm beginning to believe that people are stupid. And I don't mean everyone of course. The population of this board is in general quite intelligent in my opinion. But the general population of the UK? THICK.
Let me give you an example. We started two new staff today as waitresses. OK you say - waitressing doesn't require much brainpower. Well of course intelligence helps in any line of work but it's REALLY not that difficult. I am sure they are both more than capable of going to a table, writing down what the customers want to eat and then giving them cutlery and drinks.
Or are they?!
When a waitress brings you an order for a STAKE panini you start to wonder.
I then looked back over their application forms. Bear in mind I did NOT hire them. No. No. I place that responsibility entirely on someone elses shoulders. One of them had a summer job cleaning chalets. No. I am wrong. I apologise. She was cleaning shallies.
:(((((((((((
I am currently in despair. Is there anywhere online that I can purchase some sanity? :(

Re: Just a random thing
The wave of SMS and texting popularity is going to lead to a nation unable to spell or use grammar in the correct way. Looking at some of my pupil's work, I actually cringe sometimes.
It's only going to get worse Sar

I heard something about this on World BBC news on the radio the other day. SMS and email reduces peoples' IQ. I wanted to strangle the "doctor" when he started talking about intelligence.

Which I also stated in this forum recently. SMS & E-mails tempoarily reduces people's IQ by up to 10 points where as smoking dope only knocks it off by 4 points.

The children of britain should be forced to watch countdown day in day out.
Not only would they learn literacy and numeracy skills, they'd learn about what gran really wants for christmas.

In estate agent speak "large" and "spacious" mean slightly different things, unless you meant something else.

i think it was the 'tenement flat' and 'Dennistoun' bits that make it a problem

large means something that is big. Spacious means something that has a lot of space. These are totally different things. You can have a large building with absolutely no space at all (if it has loads of pillars or something).

what exactly is wrong with this? Blurbs are supposed to be very concise and don't have to be in perfect English. There isn't really an easy way to write about a house in less that 50words or so. Its certainly not the worst English I have seen. There isn't actually that much wrong with it at all.

Let me put it this way. The Empire State Building, while being particularly large, would not be considered spacious once filled with lumbering overweight americans. Likewise, a mini, whilst being rather small, is considered by many to be rather spacious given it's size (a better example than the mini would be the tardis).
