Writing stuff
So, do you like writing stuff?
Not like books or anything, just a little bit here, a little bit there.
Well, if you are, say so right now or forever hold your silence and breath.

I just write anything, as long as I like the idea. I think the last thing was a Coca-Cola refund request form.

I write the odd thing here and there, although never to the point where it's actually coherent enough to publish or show anyone.
These forums are probably the closest I come to "finishing" anything.
Of course, ocasionally at 3am I will wake up (or not be able to sleep, which ever) and I will have lost all powers of self-criticism. In such a state I will be utterly convinced I have an absolutley brilliant idea and I'm utterly flabagasted that no-one has thought of such an elegant, genius solution (or idea).
I will then begin to write, possibly many pages (well, type, I can't write with a pen) and it will seem amazingly brilliant. This is it, I feel like I should be in a small café in Rickmansworth, I can't believe it!
Then I get up the next morning and think "What a load of bollocks" and delete it instantly.

Maths and some conceptualising (for say planning a programming thing) is infinitely better with paper and pen.
But for long flowing paragraphs (as opposed to intellectual doodling) typing is the win. If I write for more than 5 minutes or so with a pen and paper I get chronic pains in my hand.

Well, I can understand not using a computer for mathematics, much more fun to compute mandelbrots without a computer.
But isn't normal writing easier with a computer, since it takes less time to press a key, than to move a pencil to form a letter?

I do all my conceptualising in my head. Anything I need to communicate, like calculus or planning, goes:
- through sound waves and hand gestures if available
- on paper if it's for myself, or friends who can read my handwriting
- on computer if it's for friends who can't read my handwriting
The friends I write for are Emacs, sometimes Mathematica, and people on the forums or IRC. Unfortunately they either can't read or are too far away in space and time to read my writing.
If you have pages of crap please don't delete them . I love reading well-written crap.

If I had to do maths online, I tended to do it by hand then scan it in.
Can't do that now, haven't got the scanner connected.

somewhat symptomatic of a computer dependant generation.
God help you the next time you have to sit a 3 hour exam.

The next time I have to write a 3 hour exam I will probably ask for a special dispensation to use a computer to do it on. The last exam(s) I had to do were a bloody agony due to reasons mentioned.
Fortunately I'm not enrolled on any degree program at the moment so it's academic (see what I did there?).

I've written a fair number of short stories. My longest completed effort is twenty-five-thousand words long (quarter-novel-length), and I have two or three incomplete novel efforts that are longer.
My problem is completing an idea. It's a problem you come up against when you try to write anything. It's hard work. It's fun at the beginning, when the ideas are buzzing, but as soon as it becomes difficult, stops being fun, then what for you should be a fun activity (i.e., not work) becomes boring. So you stop doing it. Months pass. You have other good ideas, write them and expand them, and come up against the same brick wall after a while. Then you go back to that first idea, read it through, and the writer's block is overcome by reflection.
I have at least two dozen incomplete stories going this way. Every few months I will reread them, and see a way I can add a few thousand more words. Eventually they reach a satisfactory conclusion. It's a messy, utterly disorganised way of pursuing my dream of becoming a published writer, but maybe it'll get me somewhere, in the end.
Two ways of writing:
1) Write from instinct. Do not plan. Start with a blank page and a brilliant idea, and start typing.
2) Plan everything in lavish and excessive detail beforehand, then start typing.
Important note: Use one of these extremes or the other. Do not go for inbetweens.
Would anyone here like to share MSNs with me? I'm [email protected] , if you want to add me.

When I was a wee lad (up to the age of about 11) I wrote a few short stories. I thought they were pretty good at the time, maybe I'll reread them one day and see how crap they really were
I think I lost interest more or less the time I started playing computer games more regularly. And they say video games stifle creativity...

I don't really write so much as noodle out loose ideas. Just short random paragraphs of many different natures representing whatever takes my fancy at the time.
Anything I write at length is either technical or philosophical.

I used to write loads of short stories. Haven't done in a while now, mostly because high school and university required a good amount of writing, pretty much taking the fun out of it
