Reputation Points
Would it be completely out of the question if I suggested implementing reputation points in the forums?
I don't really know much about the actual code of them, so maybe they wouldn't work with these. I've seen them on others though, and they work quite well. It wouldn't be such a far cry from the current POTW idea.
The main thing that made me think of it was Inferno's post (on Flav's thread about some girl he wants to flirt with or something):
Quote:

See, I'd have given him positive rep for that, as it was actually pretty funny. Admittedly, he'd have accumulated so much negative rep for it that it wouldn't mean squat, but there we go.
So. Illustrious mods. Whaddya say?

Re: Reputation Points
I dont think VB gives the option to set something like that up, and i mean, who would actually be the judge? A panel of Mods? We dont agree on anything. A group of his peers? You lot dont agree on anything.
Nice idea, but totally unworkable.

my first instinct was to talk about BIZARRO vB.
Instead, I'll point out that every other forum i've seen with reputation points is running vB and usually a recent version, so i tend to suggest it is.
And peers can give reputation points for each post. The problem is, forum users are frequently shit.
For example, if i posted in a thread in which mark had also posted and didn't post a totally contrary argument, tomkat would accuse me of STALKING MY MASTER AROUND THE FORUMS or somesuch bullshit. And if Sunday posted, deserved though it may be, the number of negative points accumulated would provide another example of the system being totally meaningless. The reverse is true for Jonny/Dante and so on.
Basically, it doesn't work.

Re: Reputation Points
No, it doesn't work like that. Underneath the avatar would be a little button saying "Comment on this post!".
You click that, then choose "Positive Comment" or "Negative Comment", and put in why you think it's crumby or a great post.
The reputation is tallied up for someone - I think the value you get is relational to the reputation of the person who gave it/took it away from you, although I don't know. To stop people (who'd care about that kind of thing) from just signing up more usernames and then positive-repping themselves.
In your User CP you can view which reputations you got for which posts, but it's anonymous who the comment/reputation was from.
So under our avatars would be some kind of indication of what level of reputation points we have are. Like a picture or a word(s).
It sounds more complicated than it is, honest.

The ones I've been on, you can't just keep repping the same people. You have to "spread the reputation" before you can comment on their posts again.
And I'm sure I wouldn't do that.
Well ok, maybe I would. But it was your idea.

Re: Reputation Points
It wouldnt work. Too many users have total preconceptions of other users. What would happen would be that within a week , JBG , Dante , Nod and a couple of others would have Rep ++++++++++++++++ , Sunday8pm would have Rep----------------- , and nobody else would have a serious rep of any nature.

Only if they make quality/utterly shit posts. You don't have to comment on every post, just those that stand out.
And that isn't such a bad thing. The idea is that the good posters get recognition for being excellent whereas the shit ones can understand where they're going wrong.
I dunno, I just want my e-penis extended.

Re: Reputation Points
But seriously though , regardless of whether certain users make good or bad posts, theyd have them marked down due to who they are, and marked up due to who they are. Its not a large enough board to really say that the users could have a reasonable degree of parity in voting.

Re: Reputation Points
I don't exactly see the point of this. So as we have basically all agreed Dante and Jonny and possibly a couple of others would end up with a great reputation. They are good posters. We know this. It is acknowledged frequently. Do they really need a little sign under their name to say so?
On the other hand, take the people generally regarded as 'poor posters'. Sunday, QDeathstar, Inferno... In particular in the case of Sunday there is such a general bias against him that he people would make a point of giving him a bad reputation regardless of whether he was trying to post seriously or not. (Anyone who denies this is lying - look at the general cheering when he was banned.)
Apart from anything else, of what benifit is this system on a board which has a relatively low user base, and where the posters already have a reputation, it's just not acknowledged under their name?

Re: Reputation Points
Well I'd vote on the quality of the post, not on who posted it. Maybe that way we could find out who deserves their current positive/negative reputations and who doesn't.

I think we had thread ratings once back in the day, (And no-one used them.) and I'm sure VB actually has some form or ratings system. I don't really see much of a need for them though.

It's all subjective. One persons good-poster is another's ****.
We already have a system like this anyway, it's just not implemented in as a forum function, as Sarina stated.

Re: Reputation Points
"Reputation points" (or Karma, to use the Slashdot equivalent) is useful in larger forums (where not everyone knows each other) or more "informative" places like Experts Exchange or something. So for example people getting a "bonus" would definitely be useful on something like the IT P&D forum - it would give an incentive to be helpful. If you had a tally of who had been the most useful (with some kind of chart) then the most helpful people get to stroke their huge e-penis on a daily basis. What's wrong with that?
But ranking threads doesn't really work - you get bad posts in good threads and vice versa. I personally consider (in their current form) both the God thread and the English rapists one to be totally moronic but there have been some excellent posts by Mark and others. Ranking would need to be on a post by post basis for it to be even vaguely meaningful.
Every user registered more than 3 months would need to be included / able to "vote". The idea that overall the majority is always wrong is a muddle headed one.
Overall though it's a good idea and I'd be interested to see it trialled or something (it won't be, too much effort for a simple experiment) but you probably would get people voting for their friends (which is no bad thing, but just leads to people feeling bitter I'd imagine). I doubt however the worst posters would be affected. Most of them get off on the idea they're being controversial / annoying anyway. Do you think Sunday or Shai would be surprised if they got a really low score?

Re: Reputation Points
Why not just re-implement them, and see how it goes?
I actually don't think that the regular people who have been around for a while and are respected as posters will get large reputations initially. Quite a few post quite rarely, and their posts are nothing particularly exceptional.

As far as i remember we only have thread rating available on these boards. Thats what JJ was talking about rather than member rating. Sorting out what you are talking (if its available on our version of VB) may need Karm, who isnt around anymore.
I dont really see it of being of any benefit either.

It means Dace's stories can be given 5* ratings, and we can have our own Comedy Goldmine.
I quite like the idea of threads being rated

Would make POTW easier and an average rating per post could be your 'reputation'

I dont need some artificial ranking system to have it confirmed that I'm a great poster. It would be like getting your IQ measured in order to prove you're intelligent
It would be ace if users got automatically permabanned if they got their negative reputation up to a high even level and had a name that began with S and contained a number.
