i wouldn't so much rape as 'steal their things'

i have argued for a more aggressive foreign policy for years.

we should cut aid and start taking things we like.

obviously no one is grateful for our newly found ethical policy. at least when we invaded them we didn't get their children ranting on our internet forums.

no, the british empire is the empire that is responible for the creation of iraq. before the great english guys came meddling in the middle east, there was no Iraq. they are the ones who have created this artificial instable state that shouldnt have been created in the first place. the same thing they did to india/pakistan and poalestine before they left. they messed those places up so badly under their rule. and look at it now, we are still fighting wars at these 3 hotspots.

If a country has power it will use that power in an effort to make sure its interests, whether these be economic/political or simply geographical are held intact. Its a very simple theory thats held true for the past several centuries. Wake up to the idea that we dont live in a fairytale world of 'do gooders' who want the 'best for everyone'.

The international system is archaic and always will be. Deal with it.

Would the countries have rather been invaded by us, the French or the Spanish?

Most of our fighting was against other Western European countries including the French, Spanish and Dutch. And the Russians did most of the killing of the Ottoman empire.

what are you blithering on about? the UNITED NATIONS (as in the body representative of the world opinions) placed sanctions on Iraq and endorsed a no fly zone...the only reason we had planes stationed there.

we did not 'rape and kill' the civilians. The current charges are against an isolated minority of rednecks who will be dealt with by our judiciary system.

I must say i'm a bit confused how someone can argue against the Brittish being the greatest (in terms of size), and still say we've fought more wars.

I'm almost positive that the Romans had a larger emipre than us, and also a more negative affect on the populus when they left.

Also, most every country that was governed by the Brittish was better off under our rule than they had ever been before or since (with the exception of america).

As an interesting sidenote, it has been said that whilst the British Empire ran the world, there was a level of peace globally that has never been matched, prior or since. Ruling by the sword does have it's advantages.

*sigh* people weren't living in an egalitarian paradise under the british empire, their living conditions and quality of life werent better than they are now, perle is an idiot but the british empire was created for the primary benefit or britain not the countries it occupied. The former 'colonies' are in a 'poor' state relative to britain but they've also improved (in politics at least) compared to where they were. If live was better for them under british rule they'd be asking for us back. They aren't.

Erm, no. Have you been reading the Daily Mail's version of history again? If you mean better off in a we've-stolen-all-your-gold-now-we'll-install-a-despot-to-make-sure-your-country-is-never-a-threat sort of way, then yeah. I quite agree.

You could argue about places like Sri-Lanka which have benefited. Not that I know the history but I know a Sri-Lankan and he says so.

You could argue the spread of liberal democracy throughout the commonwealth (which you could easy nullify anyway).

Although there's the same argument to whether Britain was better under Roman rule. Actually I'd say we were, but we were being ruled by a foreign state, which ruled for their benefit and not for the population's.

The point is that the reason they are in difficulty now is a result of British rule. We left most countries with no resources and installed a despot to **** their country. We installed a ruling class to rape their country, and they remained there like anyone would; Just look at the difference of wealth in most African countries.

You can't just plant a system of government on a foreign country and expect it to do as well as it does in your country. Populations are different- especially African tribe populations. Liberal democracy is great, but you can't just plant it somewhere fully formed. It needs to emerge like it did in western Europe. There are no quick fixes.

yes, i do like the germans. very very nice people. been living here since 8 years, never faced any racism at all. lovely people the germans. they are aware of their guilt, you see it every week in tv. they confront themselves with their past and are very sorry for their crimes.

if you're thinking of King James I, then no. there were tons of kings waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before ol' jimmy (who i believe was the first non-english king of england). Of course i could be completly wrong about this, i stopped doing history after KS3
