Once upon a time all forum links in overview from pa team for announcements were hardcoded within the game to open in a new window, now i fully undestand that u can set up your browser to do this, but not everyone is technically advanced enough to do so..
So for those who are not ... put it back please :-)

I'm convinced we changed this becuase people complained?

u could just right click on them and choose how u want to open them etc.

Bit of an ugly hack but you could have a "(new)" put after the link, which opens in a new window. The original link would still open in the current window

Problem is the current way, people have a choice, Your proposed system, they don't.
