Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
What ever happend to ICQ, i used to use it all the time but now i use msn, just cos all my friends use that now.
ICQ had so much more functions but i think it was the bots that ruined it, and it was not advertised on peoples defualt homepage.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
It's much easier to remember an e-mail address than a long number.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
ICQ was not bundled with the OS that 90% of people use. MSN Messenger is.
Game over.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
ICQ was fine and dandy , but eventually you had to stop advertising that you were online because 300 bots a day would message you, attempt to connect to your computer, or sell you sex websites and such, that it became shit.

Generally I found the whole thing pretty cumbersome.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
I don't really use it much anymore mostly because everyone who used to use it has stopped and I only ever have two contacts online, to be honest it's got a lot better bot wise, since I reinstalled I've not had a single message, also ICQ Lite > ICQ.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
I don't think it's just a bundling issue. Windows Media Player is bundled with Windows but as Winamp is better, I'll happily download it and use it. Most people I know don't use WMP for media.
With instant messaging though, MSN always seemed less, to borrow MM's term, cumbersome than ICQ. ICQ had an awesome range of features but always seemed to run slowly, screens were filled with clutter, it crashed, etc. They were like the anti-Google of instant messaging.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
I think unfortunately it just got too many shit people using the thing.
MSN is aweful, but Trillian seems to take MSN and make it useable.

Re: Instant messanging and the fall of ICQ
I used to use ICQ loads too, and all my friends. The option, at the age of 16 or so, to search for people who lived near you, was quite fun.
Now though, I can't be bothered to find people who live near me. I can guarantee most girls my age who are regularly online in ICQ will be munters and annoying. Not hot 16 year olds, like back in the day.
Plus most other people use MSN (the ones who aren't very tech-savvy) as it's user-friendly. Because all of them use it, I'm forced to use it too if I want to communicate wiht them.

I didn't know AOL bought ICQ.
Why'd they do that? They already have AIM... was their intention to merge them or something?
