btw does it have full backwards compatibility and support for older platforms or does it force you to use .NET technology?

The MSDN would answer that better. There has been some extreame makeovers and changes, espically to window forms and you can see in VB has the most extream changes bringing it into being fully Object Oriented then the half arsed v6 way. While C++ has proably seen the least.
There is also some VERY nice new templeates, like the ability to add a windows service application with little or no pain.
As far as I can tell, I just started using it, C++ supports the older platforms while C#, J#, and VB (I know VB for sure) make you use .NET.
