Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
Quote:
Dear ChubbyChecker,
Your account on Planetarion Forums has been locked because someone has tried to
log into the account with the wrong password more than 5 times. You will be able
to attempt to log in again in another 15 minutes.
|
I received this message at 21:49 last night. Now, I know it wasn't me that got locked out because I'm always signed in. So some fiendish rogue has been trying to log in to my account!
Anybody else received this e-mail? If so I suggest we get a lynch mob organised and go in search of this heinous person.

100 accounts? damn
they must either have very weak passwords or they are all connected to the person somehow and used them in other things.
OR, theres a huge hole in the pa forums security systems as nodrog has pointed out.
i hope at the very least the ip is blacklisted

No we shouldnt. People whom find what seem to be security holes and then report their findings should be thanked. The person in question had known about it for days and continued to use it to their advantage without informing anyone.
And you would be surpised with the names of those comprised, my won account is one of them and it includes a number of other mods, pateam and creators past and present as well as a number of high profile posters

Depends what they did with it I guess. Deleting all my posts or posting lots of stupid comments* would be mildly annoying.

it depends what the poster did. if they deleted people's posts or posted garbage, boo. if they did something less heinous, like giving themself mod powers or enabling attatchments or what have you, then it hurts noone and is undone easily and helps you patch a flaw, so i see no need for punishment

I got six of those emails, all within a minute of each other, obviously with different IPs.
Didn't think I was high-profile enough for this sort of thing. Presumably I'd know from my 'last visit' date if they got in? Or can that be easily changed?

All this for some rep points? How pathetic.

I just checked the rep I had given and I noticed I had given an unsigned rep-point to idimmu yesterday aswell and I can't remember giving it and I sure as hell see no reason why I would give rep to that post.

Same thing happened to me, I hardly ever read GD and I never read that thread, yet I gave that exact same post a pos rep last night at a time I wasn't even online.

Re: Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
I told JJ about a risk to do with this forum several weeks ago which he fixed.
'Currently' there are 2 high-risk vulnerabilities that exist on the 3.5.3 system that is in place here (really should upgrade to 3.5.4). One is a DoS exploit and the other is a way to steal your hash just by you clicking on a link that might appear to go to an image but you're secretly redirected to a hash stealer (works via cookies) and then passed onto the image - oblivious to what just went on.
That's why if you have Firefox, you should download the NoScript extension
As for idimmu, he recently hacked the arcade scores at another place - literally took over with scores of 999999999999999. heh. Either he is a genius or he's just using these exploits which I know appear in popular security forums (no I won't link them).

Re: Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
My 2 cents:
1) JJ has nothing to do with forum upgrades. Jolt still require us to ask them to do even the most trivial things that can't be done through the Mod CP.
2) No damage has been done, in the great scheme of things this is largely unimportant; less drama please.
3) If you want to blame someone, blame Jolt for not keeping the software up to date.

Re: Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
This is why I gave idimmu pos rep recently. It granted me immunity to idimmu's evil scheme. Well, at least the part where he wanted my account to rep him at least.

Re: Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
When is the anonymous rep being taken away? JJ said on Thursday heh.
Anyway, idi should be unbanned. At least he's identified there is a flaw with the security here and Jolt should review it. But I doubt they will tbh. as they'll probably take a "v3.6 will fix the problem" stance.

Are you saying what's the point of banning him as otherwise he'll just use someone else's account?

Re: Account on Planetarion Forums locked out
He can bypass the ban though - through proxies, SSH connection etc.

That doesn't make him able to use his idimmu account though.
