male and female and germans
I have started doing a bit of parallel port programming as a bit of a personal project, but the thing is I still need to connect something to the port. would I be correct in saying that a male port is the one with the pins, and the female one the one with the holes (for obvious reasons) and is this the same in german, if anyone happens to know?

incidentally does anyone know much about USB port programming?

Programming communication via a serial port and USB are two radically different things depending on what you need to do.

With the standard serial ports it's only a matter of opening a connection on the interface (be it "COM1" "COM2" whatever). With USB depending on the device on the other end you would need to write a complete driver to allow your device and the PC to interface with each other. USB ports do not act like a standard serial port despite the fact it sends serialized data.

If you are trying to send data to an existing device with its own prewritten virtual serial port driver (like for instance a printer connected via USB), then I think it may be possible to open the port by referrenceing it's virtual port name (for example "USB001" instead of "COM1").

When referring to cinch cables or something similar, i'd use the words "Buchse" (-> female) and "Stecker" (-> male), which I think are the words for socket and plug, respectively.
If you buy cinch / coax / whatever cables, you'll find that information on it as well, i.e. "Buchse auf Buchse" which should mean "socket to socket".

However, the male / female thing makes sense, although I haven't come across it yet in Germany.

Only a couple of days ago I learned that the english word for "Mutter" (not the meaning mother) is "female screw", and I was a bit suprised (didn't expected it, I seriously would've guessed "mother"...).
