com is obviously best, but most of the good domainnames are taken - youre more likely to find a better available name if you go onto alternative TLDs. However, youd have to balance this out against the risk of people forgetting yoursite address. I often just remember the domain-name rather than .com/.org bit, which means I sometimes have to cycle through the .com/.net/.org extensions until I find the right one. If it was something obscure like .biz or .mo, I probably wouldnt find it.
edit: for instance, it took me ages to internalise the imageshack url as being imageshack.us rather than us.imageshack.com
