[america] This is very strange
In the dutch online newspaper "De Volkskrant" among the leading headlines for the foreign news is a story from 07:23 about how four US soldiers raped a fifteen yer old girl and murdered her family to get away with it, in cold blood. It´s not an old story, it has several good sources, and the paper is a respected one. (not a tabloid at all or anything of the sort) Here´s the article: (in dutch sorry) http://www.volkskrant.nl/buitenland/...oorden_in_Irak
So when trying to check this on BBC newssite (or any other US/UK newssite), I find nothing, not a single reference or hint. Intrigueing!
Now - (1) would BBC have chosen not to bring you that news or (2) they aren´t aware of it? (3) It´s not true , (4) is any other option, if you think this to be the case explain yourself please.

Re: [america] This is very strange
I read about this in an irish newspaper (yesterday I think). I'm rather surprised the bbc have nothing on it.
Ah, new post. Still, you said you hadn't read anything on any us news websites. Is this actually true? Which ones did you check?

Re: [america] This is very strange
That´s corrected now as I did not look deep enough into the newssite. It is quite deep, actually, webpagewise.

It seems to take the focus away from the crime, doesnt it.

US Law, there is no SOFA between the US and Iraq yet. He faces the death penalty if convicted.

Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. We know this even in the prosecuter's office.

With dda and Yahwe on this one. This is an alleged offence for which the soldier has yet to even be indicted, mush less tried. Let's hope they hold off on the death penalty until these formalities are completed, eh?

Re: [america] This is very strange
Oh, you actually thought they wouldn´t? Ofcourse they will.
Yet I think the evidence does not lack sufficient proof of the whole thing. Otherwise these newspapers wouldn´t have brought it. ANd did I not read somewhere he actually confessed (or one of the mates he shot the family with)?

One of the four soldiers charged told a counsellor what had happened.

I know that it is much more efficient to hang the condemned before the trial but I am old school and a stickler for formalities. I have seen false confessions.

Re: [america] This is very strange
Sadly, informants are often belived over a defendant who does not rat out his/her buddies. Fake confessions are not a rarity, not to mention if the person who is interogated is under emotionall stress, something you would think a guy like that would be. And just maybe the guy who has ratted told a story that helps him? Witnesses and confessions are very bad evidence, in my eyes at least.

It's fine making platitudes like this, but given the historical precedent, I find it unlikely that he would receive a proper trial and fitting punishment even if he were guilty (Calley and Christopher Van Goethem come to mind).
When the military's record of admitting and dealing with things like this is somewhat less than ideal, you can forgive us for being sceptical.
