So, the US has oil
And lots of it - 1000 billion barrels apparently.
I wonder if it's enough to worry OPEC...

Re: So, the US has oil
Sounds a little too good to be true doesn't it? But if it's do-able, then it should be interesting.

Some folks estimate the amount of shale oil worldwide at 12 trillion barrels. Many agree that 60% of that is located in the US (7 trillion). Green River is the largest field but there are other substantial deposits.
If this pans out, Detroit will start turning out SUV's the size of a Boeing 747.

Re: So, the US has oil
I guess it is now the responsibility of western Europe to develop effective alternative energy sources. We're completely screwed.

Re: So, the US has oil
Tentatively off topic, but apparently the people of Gibraltar use more oil per capita than anyone else.

Those bastards. (Strangely enough US oil consumption isn't shown..)

I wouldn't go too excited about this until oil is actually being produced efficiently using this method.

Re: So, the US has oil
I calculate it as 68 barrels per day per 1000 people. (Not completely accurate because I used 2003 consumption and 2005 estimated popluation). That would put the United States at #11.
What do the people in Gibraltar do, buy oil and pump it into the ocean?

It's probably basic infrastructure use for things like power, water pumps, etc. Even though there are less people, those things, even on a smaller scale, probably still consume a lot of oil. This would scew oil use per capita statistics for small areas a bit I think, although I honestly have no idea what I'm talking about.

Re: So, the US has oil
I think Gibraltar also has to use a desalination plant for water, it's also a hefty military base and has its own airport. Also, with that fking big hill, they ain't gonna be walking everywhere, and fuel consumption getting up it would be hefty.
