job dilemma-ness

So, i'm thinking about going for another job, same employer etc but a different location, the difference?
Its very junior management, but it IS management, although curiously, i would probably have to take a £50 a month (roughly) pay cut
The ONLY plus point of this job however, would be the management experience, other than that, it's really gonna be shit if I go for it and get it, as some of the staff i would have to work with i don't think i could get on very well with, and, to be honest, i know that the person who would be my boss is a shit.

so, do you think it would be worth going for, knowing that to get management experience worth anything i would probably have to stick with it, no matter how bad, for at least 2 years?

I have just applied for an EO (line manager job) on the evening shift.

The job is only part time (20 hours a wekk).

If i got it it would mean a drop in wage from 16k to 10k.



I'm going for the job because i believe i can get on (whether within or without the organisation) with management experience.

It's up to you whether you decide if the management experience is important.

(it probably is)

It really depends on whether you think you can successfully complete the experience. Don't do it unless you feel fairly confident that you can put up with what will face you in the new position. You can always wait for another opportunity to open and maybe the conditions will be better.

Like Dace said, if you want to further your career go for the managment. Be it in the same company or a different company, it will give you more career possibilities and the chance to potentially earn more. if you can work with the shit of a manager then that proves even more that you have the crudentials to suceed.

Finally you havent got the job yet, you might not get it, but it wont hurt trying and will make your intentions known to the company you are working for.

very true, i may not get it, as there will probably be 3 or 4 (including me) strong internal candidates, but, i know i can do it, and i will probably be considerably younger than the other candidated (like, 25 years younger)but i don't know if that would come across as a good thing or not....

think i'm going to apply, as the experience is pretty much an essential thing that i need to do anything now

But seriously, whenever I hear about 'Junior Managers' I see some poor bastard that does all the shitty jobs, is hated by his employees who earn more than they do and is derided by Upper Management since they know they can keep them where they are on the 'carrot on a stick' principle that, yes, absolutely, keep up the good work we'll find you that next level position any time now, hopefully before you retire...

I've successfully managed (oh my god, there I go again, **** me I'm funny) not to have any management responsibility. OK, so I have to sort out projects, make sure someone will be on-site when they need to be, but since that person is me, it's usually not too hard to work out...

Then again, I just looked at my biz card and it says 'Product Applications Manager'

experience is pretty important now that you can get a degree free with a packet of cornflakes, especially if you are working in the public sector (liberaries right?) where it has always been valued.

i decided to have a go at this career lark about 5 years ago and started by working as an office assistant and going part time to college (though i only got as far as HND it was so boring)
by making tactical moves every 18 months or so i am now three months into my first management roll and have doubled my wages :-)

the best thing i can advice you to do is to move diagonally through the departments, and if you have to organisations (two years of this and a couple of professional qualifications along the way and i shall be looking to jump diagonally again)

you really wont need to put up with the other job for two years (its only your first step upwards and it isnt up enough to provide you much of a learning curve)
if you show yourself to be keen to move further and 'manager' is your current job title for 6 months you will be accepted and interviewed for higher level jobs at which time you can show yourself to be career minded and sufficiently understretched by the crap job.

i would say, if this is the only lowish level management job in the sector to come up for a while it might be worth going for, knowing that it is on a temporary basis, but if there are popping up reasonably regularly you might be better to take an even slightly upwards step rather than a sideways one.

and there is no harm in applying anyway, it shows you are looking to further yourself
