Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
I noticed that once again in several places that concept of multiple ship targetting has come up regarding previous rounds of PA.
My suggestion builds on this in a different way. Due to the nature of Fighters etc going pop when going toe to toe with Cruisers whcih like killing them :-) how about this
Fighters can target 2 or 3 ships classes, and as before have a primary, secondary and tertiary targets. Corvettes would have 2 or 1 and anything larger still only targets one ship type.
This brings the back the value and use of fighters as quite honestly currently they are pretty crap.

Re: Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
Surely this would mean that a Fighter/Corvette fleet would be able to target everything, thus making it too powerful?

Re: Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
You may lose 3x as many fighters to a Cr as a similar matchup involving say Frigates and Cr, but consider that you paid about 3x as much for each Fr too.
The real stats to look at are the cost to damage and armor ratios. Thats a first basic step at looking at how different ships compare and fit into the overall balance.
People who advocate having ships do multiple targetting don't remember the r3 Ghost, and people who think Fighters are crap obviously haven't met a clever Xan (or perhaps built adequate Anti-Fi, in which case, ANY class of ship would be crap, Balanced fleets are good.)
I've probably gotten 2/3 of my last 2k roids with Fi instead of Fr.

maybe the game could be set with fighters and corvettes with 1 target only, frigates and destroyers with a T1 and T2, then give the cruisers and battleships the full whack of T1, T2 and T3....
this would be a more realistic portrayal of how the ships would be constructed....
but like i said, i havent given it a lot of thought and might be a pile of crap, or might have been mentioned before and shot down...

Re: Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
I gave up on realism or ideas that make sense in a "role playing" or "Universe Consistency" sense when round 2 rolled out, and have never been given cause to question that decision since.

ships stats base changes;-
with 2 targetting rather than 1
but in a system ie;
Each race will possess 3 ships that target this:
fi/co
fr/de
cr/bs
these three ships will all be different classes+different quality for various races etc. Also
id like 9 different ships which target;
fi x 2
co x 2
fr x 2
de x 1
cr x 1
bs x1
Once again, these ships are all of different classes etc. for different races.
I'd also make it so that the ships that target 2 classes are clearly less efficient than the ones that target only 1 class. So that will make everyone think if hey want to cover everything, but they will pay for that in the price of efficiency.
But with variations as thats just an initial idea, ill put more thought into targetting system later, just an initial idea tbh.

is one of my takes on the targetting system
Another point is: Single targetting is nice because of the mere fact that PA uses1hr ticks - it suits it 100%.
PS. Why do the current fi/co suck? I rather love the zik/terran co fleets, and the xanda fi. Both to roid with and defend (exceptions are to be made sometimes ofc). Cath fi/co i haven`t really bothered to look at as much so can`t comment.

Re: Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
It would actually be a simple thing to balance, really.
Simply change the damage a unit can do to non-primary targets eg: A fighter that might do 4 dammage to fighter/corvette class ships has a harder time penetrating the armor on larger ships, so instead does 1 dammage to anything frigate class or higher.

up: that sounds a very good way to force people to make the trade-off between ship strength/effiency and travel-time (especially if they're in alliances)

Re: Multiple targetting and ship specialisation
>>Why do the current fi/co suck?
I think they learned their lesson from round 5, when the Figter was pretty awesome.
Some big players in R5 had around 350,000 + of them, and because of their speed, we could vaporize targets before any defence could even reach them, and then roid freely because what is the point of losing ships defending a completely crispy world that will be under attack 24/7 anyways until the roids get low?
