Re: Stats discussion post R62
Ascendancy came up with 2 options before round start, both focused around Cat/Zik/Xan.
Option 1:
- Cat De (heavy on Moth and Mantis, to deal with Fi/Co/Bs)
- Zik Fr (Sairs for Fr, Buccs for Cr and Thief for killing ally-ETA defense)
- Xan support (Pulsar for anti-De and Vsh for Fi).
Cat De/Zik Fr teamups are unstoppable by anything other than mass, mass Co, and with these stats being very defensive in nature, teamups were the way to go anyway.
Option 2:
- Cat Co (Beetles for anti-Fi, Black Widow for anti-Co/Cr, Mantis for anti-Bs)
- Zik Co (Sair for Fr, Cutlass for anti-Fi/De, Bucc for Cr)
- Xan support (Pulsar for anti-De, Phantom for anti-Co)
Co is solid all-round, and we had quite a few people who weren't quite certain how active they were going to be, so Xan would be a natural choice for them.
We very briefly discussed Cr, but the huge amount of resources needed in ally-ETA anti-Fi/CO, the vulnerability to FCs, and the activity required to handle defense were all down-sides we felt Ascendancy could not compensate for as other alliances might be able to.
In the end we went for option 2, in the knowledge that since both strategies depended on the same races, and in fact many of the same ships, a switch to option 1 would be feasible mid-round. And this in fact did happen. As the round progressed, we discovered that Co/Fr was actually a very strong combination defensively. In 1 : 1 or 2 : 1 numbers in Co : Fr, it was also nicely fakeable, since only Fi fires at both classes.
