I was reading a comment piece in the Guardian today[1] that mentioned the tories are to soften their views on immigration. I hadn't heard anything about this, so tried to discover more but the BBC website failed me, and the first story I came across was from the mail[2], which began:
"Britain 'suffering' because of immigration, say Tories"...not exactly promising. 'The Tory Diary' was another site carrying the story, and it provides quite a concise summary of where the mail and the Times agree.
I don't really think a discussion on the merits of the policy will lead anywhere interesting, but the differeing angles taken on the announcments intrigued me slightly. It seems to me that they're attempting to make sure immigration remains some kind of issue, without going as far as campaigns did under Howard, and with the Mail and a Guardian columnist both seeming happy/pleased with the news, they seem to have succeeded.
As an aside, Ms. Russell mentions in passing an amnesty on un-registered/illegal immigrants currently in the country, as a possible solution to the problem of such people being exploited amongst other things. How could this be a bad thing?
