WH Smith reports enormous losses.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3741684.stm
This is in no way suprising; I really don't know what WH Smith's is for anymore. It's books and electronics sections are always both appalingly small, and in any case, ridiculously ovedrpriced, considering the competition. Which essentially relegates it to a position of a glorified newsagents. And I don't need a glorified newsagents when a bog-standard one will do.
I really don't think it has much of a future as a business, tbh.

Re: WH Smith reports enormous losses.
They have a nice sweet section.
Or am I thinking of Woolworths?
There's another unneeded shop...
sometimes they have a decent sale on for books... that's the only reason i'd ever buy from there.

Good lord, when? They throw children's books, of the type that is made of vomit-resistant rubber into a bargin bin occassionally, but I've never actually seen a proper sale.

Re: WH Smith reports enormous losses.
I bought a printer from them last year. Its still working quite well, and i got clubcard points for it. Nowhere else would sell me a decent printer/scanner for less than £100. Everything here is marked up to hell because of import prices

Is Waterstone's an acceptable place to acquire books without being looked down upon by the bourgeoisie?

Re: WH Smith reports enormous losses.
WH Smith, Woolworths, Marks and Spencers will all be gone before too long.
They all try to offer 'a bit of everything' but end up charging far over the odds for it. Any of their products can be bought at Tesco/Asda at far more reasonable prices.
Or if you like M&S for their 'better' food you could always shop at Waitrose which is much more palatable.

I purchased cigarettes from them a while ago.
Other than that, I've avoided the place.

Re: WH Smith reports enormous losses.
I find WH smith good for stationary related issue's and for their range of magazines, however I feel that their foray into the home entertainment market was doomed at the start, what with Renton shoplifting from them all those years back I'm sure it's set an unreported trend.

Try looking in the Obituaries instead of the funnies.

WH Smiths once had a Dorling Kindersly book about sex. Soemthing like 99 tips to improve your sex life.
It was 99p in the bargain bin! I didn't buy people laughed when I was looking at it

if they still own their real estate then they're not going to fail easily. With a shop on most high streets; they just need to redevelop their core business.

Which are clearly a luxury of the middle class gentleman. WHSmiths' market must be shiftless students and manual labourers.
