The flashlight gives about as much light as something that doesn't give much light.

Apparently no one else seems to mind that their daily workplace has a 3 meter visibility radius.

Besides, everyone their has some sort of scar and weighs about as much as a small truck. I don't think anyone is going to tell them that they're doing illegal stuff.

Graphics are pretty good, I especially liked the detail in the little walking robots. I don't have a video card to do the game justice, unfortunately.

It is still part of the series, so I assumed it counted towards the total. Like the Final Fantasy games, which have been on a million different systems, yet the names continued.

If you think the flash light in Doom 3 is bad you can't have played FarCry with its amazing 0.5 meter range flash light. Most people who complain about the darkness are running it at low quality settings, for some reason the game appears horribly dark unless you run at High+.

I'd say the game is worth it, I've been through single player 3 times and still love it. Not tried multi yet since I'm in the UK and my real copy doesn't come until Friday when it's released here. From what I've heard most people think multiplayer sucks, if it turns out that it does I won't care since I bought this for the single player. Some promising mods are apparantly in the works though, including Team Fortress.

The only time I flipped on the flashlight in Far Cry was when I found it near a dark tunnel section. Otherwise, you don't need it anywhere.

Well they try to cover for the darkness in the story...

* SPOILERS BELOW *

A few of the PDAs you find have audio logs and e-Mails bitching about the Delta Labs drawing so much power that other areas often lose power, and at the best of times have to operate on very low power.

At the end of the day we all know the darkness is only there to attempt to scare us and their weak cover story doesn't work.

As for FarCry, I guess the poor flashlight isn't so much of an issue since you only ever need it in the tunnel on the Radar level, and possibly again on the first pitch black night time level before you find the Cryvision goggles.

Anyway, back to Doom3, as the game progresses it does brighten up, when you go to Hell you lose your flashlight, but you don't really need it. After hell you get it back but only really need it for the CPU complex .

After some more playtime, it seems Doom3 consists mainly of running around a base which has all identical rooms, eg. metal grating along the walls, random walkways through them because walking on the floor is prohibited, lots of pipes that all leak steam, random computer screens at eye-height for a baby midget, and flashy moving parts that indicate SCIENCE!!!111222 to take place.

The gameplay seems to be shooting at every monster that randomly spawns around you every 20 seconds, accompanied by someone turning off the light.

It's a strange thing given the amount of detail that went into realistic lighting that the flashlight seems so insignificant, it should at least have a halo of sorts around it giving ambient light to areas outside the 'hotspot'.

I've not had the chance to try multiplayer but from looks it'd be alright, by far my favourite part of the game so far is the improved 'Berserker' effect. Miss the ole double-barrel shotty though :/

It's good, but it's not ground breaking. I didn't have the same problems Leshy did with the flashlight, so I'm not exactly sure what the hell he's crying about. :P Sure, if you don't like games that make you use a flashlight, this is definately not the game for you but I had no dim light issues. My flashlight worked just fine.

It's a good shoot-em-up game with lots of learning not to trust the shadows. There's a ton of different stuff, but considering the entire game takes place on a Mars installation, it's not going to change that much in general theme.

The look and feel DOES change, with sections of mars surface, hell itself, and caverns.

It is not a tactical shooter by any means. Your enemies almost always know where you are, they hop out of closets, spawn behind you, and are obviously tied to triggers.

That said, the graphics are stunning, the atmosphere of the entire game is amazing, and the game itself scales VERY well to lower end PC's if you do just a couple of tweaks.

Doom 3 was designed to retell the doom story and to have that edge of tension/horror that comes with lots of blood, darkness, and things that lurk in it. Needless to say, some people hate it, most love it, but at the end of the day, id games delivered exactly what they promised.

Well, the thing works, it just doesn't give much light - real world flashlights generally give a much wider spread, not a near-100% dropoff point. You'd think they invent better ones in the next 141 years, too.

It just feels way too artificial, especially with the completely boring and non-inventive surroundings so far in the installation. The graphics engine is excellent, it's just been used to produce a fairly non-involving shoot'm up that is still at about the level of Quake I. Frankly, if the name Doom hadn't been on the box, I doubt it would have generated so much interest.

Edit: Apparently Gamespot came to the same conclusion, but they put it in nicer words and wanked off so much over the graphics, they still gave the game a good rating.

Doom 3 is quite possibly the best-looking game ever, thanks to the brand-new 3D graphics engine used to generate its convincingly lifelike, densely atmospheric, and surprisingly expansive environments. At the same time, when you look past the spectacular appearance, you'll find a conventional, derivative shooter. In fact, if you played the original Doom or its sequel back in the mid '90s (or any popular '90s-era shooter, for that matter), you may be shocked by how similarly Doom 3 plays to those games. The legions of id Software's true believers will celebrate this straightforwardness as being deliberately "old school," especially since Doom 3 is packed with direct references to its classic predecessors. However, the truth of the matter is that Doom 3's gameplay structure and level design are behind the times and very much at odds with the game's cutting-edge, ultrarealistic looks.

I agree with the review completely, but like they said, I still had fun. :P It's worth the cash, if only because it's amusing to play and it's completely moddable.

correct me if Im wrong but is doom3 not meant to be (Essentially) a modern retelling of the original doom with sexy gfx and lighting but stil retaining the feel and action of the original........yet it seems to be getting slammed for doing exactly what its supposed and not being HL2 or Ut2004.

I could re-release Pong wtih some high-tech graphics, and exactly the same gameplay. That wouldn't make it a good game now, despite the original having been popular at some point. Look at Return to Castle Wolfenstein for a remake which took the original and did more than just add new graphics and slam it in a box.

I found it to be fairly excellent.

Regardless, whether you liked or disliked it, you cannot deny the fact that it took the premise of the original game and created a modern 3D shooter with it, instead of coming up with a super graphics engine that is only used to walk through a castle, trying to press walls everywhere a portrait of Hitler or a swastika adorns the wall, and shooting three different types of Nazi's. Which would be the equivalent of what Doom3 has done.
