****ing Microsoft.
Ok, so, I've had a lot of virus problems etc with this PC.
I updated my firewall.
I did a virus scan.
Everything worked fine.
I rebooted and got the 'There are 04595995495959493948483 critical updates you need to install' popup.
I installed the critical updates.
I cant use WinMX, I cant use BitSpirit/BitTorrent/ShadowsExpermintal/anyBTclient, Kazaa, or Direct Connect++.
They all work fine for about 10-15-30minutes, and then the PC starts slowing up, like its under a huge memory load. Programs randomly crash, the most common being mIRC, MSN messenger, and whatever fileshare prog I was using.
I have no fking clue how to fix this.
Help.

I'd tell you to run "spybot S&D" or "adaware" (google is your friend) but I have a feeling some of your things won't run after it's done cleaning out your system either...

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
it appears you have some sort of malware that has either sent your firewall crazy or is just taking up CPU cycles

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
Run Panda AV.
Run SkySweeper.
Run Ad-Aware.
Run SpywareBlaster.
Update ZoneAlarm and use their AV.
If all else fails, back-up your files, disconnect hard-drive, chuck out window.

Well, I run both pretty much once a week.
Both have come up completely clean.
I've done another virus scan, Panda Activescan web thing, that comes up clean.
I have no ****ing idea what is causing this.

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
Hmm, know of another online virus scan to try?
On a possible, related note, NortonAV will not run on this pc. It starts, crashes, etc.
Running ZoneAlarm Pro.

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
Hmm. Download warez/porn, yes.
Blame windows because it works shitty. In this case, yes. Since things were generally fine, ie, I was still able to download more bootleg shite, until I installed an MS critical update.
I always show full extensions, so its not that, heh.

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
Look on the bright side, I (Have to) use Gay-O-L and 2 days ago it updated itself, and nothing would download, ie the download box would crash, whatever it was. Chatted to the wankers at said Gay-O-L who couldnt help. Reinstalled AOL and IE (it happenned on both). Tried to repair XP just to see. This failed half way through and wouldnt reinstall. Used a different copy of XP (both official - woah dude) which kinda worked, but now the programs are all their but they dont work and the file typesthey support are not being recognised. AOL tried to update again - no way buddy, dont think so. Cue many hours of reinstalling programs ahead.

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
simple solution
just sysmte restore to a point where the updates aren't present, test your programs out if they are still bust maybe reinstall windows
another thing that i found out during the week. If you disable progs in startup spbot/adaware wont find em. You have to enable em restart then scan.
stop looking at porn cos that where most spyware adware comes from, also if u can't stop tjust change ur browser to opera r sumthin. cba explain why go to google figure it out yourself might stop you lookin at porn

Format C:\
Hit with hammer.
Lit on fire.
That should just about get it, though with some of this new spyway I think that a tactical nuclear strike is the only way to remove it.

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
Online virus scanners are no good as they usuall only scan for the <x> most recent threats. To scan for everything you generally need a local scanner (I use Norton, but there are plenty of others).
Oh and you don't know what hating Microsoft is until you try and install Windows 98se on a brand new Dell, which was my task at work today (don't blame me, we needed it as a software testbed). Suffice it to say that 98 is less than happy figuring out what to do with current hardware, and after 5 failed installation attempts using various different methods I finally got into some sort of working order by installing from the command line in order to disable it's ACPI support. By some sort of working order, i mean "the screen now works". It still stuck at 640x480 in 16 colours tho...

Re: ****ing Microsoft.
What about the hardware side of things?
How old is the HD?
Is the Ram still in good nick?
Is your cable modem (or modem) in good working order and is the isp being notoriously shit lately (NTL have nubbed certain area's for months at a time).
Sounds like you could have a shiteload of bad sectors on your HD especially if you are into downloading lots of stuff and prolly deleting a lot of it and redownloading shiteloads more stuff, especially if you've had a few nasty viruses writing all sorts of shit to the HD as well.

I only have a firewall, and the last time I ran AdAware was like months ago.
I have no problems.
