Predictions for 2006
So what do you guys predict will happen that is of signficance either internationally or nationally or personal by the end of 2006?
I predict that:
US troop levels in Iraq will decrease dramatically in 2006
The global economy will improve slowly
Bush's approval ratings will improve
There will be another big terror strike, but somewhere in indonesia or mayalsia or Australia

Re: Predictions for 2006
Similar to my points in the other thread really.
The US to increase it's focus on the Latin America countries which increasingly seek to openly defy her (in particular Venezuala & Bolivia and perhaps Argentina and even Cuba). I would not be surprised if there is (perhaps not open) support for coups, increased instability or even secession (as with the Eastern provinces in Bolivia).
The RIAA and MPAA to continue their onslaught against personal freedoms in the name of corporate profit (distributed disproportionately to the wealthiest Americans).
The importance of GPL & Creative Commons licences to grow markedly ; especially in the fields of video, music & documentation production. Possibly these developments will be attacked (snidely) by the old content industries & their outlets - but these bodies will generally miss the point quite dramatically.
A fairly rapid increase in "DIY" (or "amateur") productions especially in television and movies (in combination with the above licences) due to the sharp decline in costs for many operations (in particular editing, but also eventually HD cameras and the like). We'll get lots more TV series available to download from the internet free of charge bypassing television and cinema chains altogether. Notable current examples being Pure Pwnage or The Scene . Or of course, T&F's movie.
Social Democrats & Liberals of various colours will totally misunderstand much of the above. They'll still see Castro (or Chavez for that matter) primarily as a "queer basher" and faithfully parrot the Washington line thereby strengthening imperialism. Or they'll think that Wikipedia isn't very good despite not really understanding its significance (or, in some cases, operation).

While some of the comments, from Bolivia especially, are over the top, I admire their resistance to US influence. I kind of like Venezuela's belligerent leader. Americans who find his tone threatening, amuse me, it's their damn country. Americans feign ignorance about US imperialism, really...

Re: Predictions for 2006
I reckon Castro will shuffle off the mortal coil this year. I wonder what will happen there. There will still be no progress in North Korea, I don't care about iraq.

The western side of La Palma will collapse into the Atlantic Ocean, generating a megatsunami and devastating the entire eastern coast of the Americas.

Re: Predictions for 2006
I don't really see any international situations coming to a head this year. However just for the laugh I'm going to predict that a nuclear weapon is used some time this year.

Hmm, you know something we don't? You're not going to be surprised if a nuclear warhead blows up The Tube or something. Clearly you have a clever plan.
The World Cup will be a huge success for all German Breweries, but not for the german national team. Norway didn't get there, but I will go see a game either way, and since its the one I went to, it is going to be an amazingly bad games (I usually don't have all that luck with the games I go to).
Global Economy will improve. Electronics will be cheaper than ever before, and I will buy a new computer, and a subwoofer for my surround. I will quit online gaming, join the Military, and my post is going to be Varanger, on the russian border, where there's going to be lots of snow and little of civilization and beer.

No, no, it's actually just about right. In fact, to blow up the entire Tube system, you'd need the coverage of a nuclear bomb.

Yeah, airburst style. Oh wait that wouldnt effect the tube!
underground you'd have a much small blast radius.
duh.

Well, that depends really. The Tube goes under the city, and if those tunnels blew up, if only a small blast radius beneath the city, it would cause severe damage to surface London itself. Casualties would be extreme, and as a target for terrorism, The Tube could be as good as anything, considering the densely populated area's above, and the density of travelers in the Tube it self.

Re: Predictions for 2006
If a nuke was set off inside the tube, surely it would be more dangerous as the explosion will be confined to the tunnels?
(yes except for the epicentre and like a mile radius around it, but which would cave in and cause mayhem on the surface)

Re: Predictions for 2006
No, since it would be absorbed by the rock around it. The Tube's pretty spread out, to be honest. Structural damage would be tricky but you wouldn't destroy the entire Tube as such.

I don't know. But if someone asked me who's more likely to leave, the manager or (insert key player), I'd say the player.
Wenger wants to do something with Arsenal, build a superb dynasty though he's not getting quite right. But a player is more likely to leave.
