Good Bye New Orleans?
"I remember when there used to be a city named New Orleans in the United States."
This may be a frequent comment in the near future if the weather people are correct. It looks like hurricane Katrina is going to slam Louisiana tomorrow. They are saying on television that there may be as much as a 25-foot tidal surge. New Orleans is below sea level. The huge lake that is to the east of the city connects to the Gulf of Mexico and will probably push huge amounts of water into the city. It is possible that the city could be under 10-15 feet of water! One guy, a meteorologist who is an expert on hurricanes, says that there could, in the worst secenario, be as much as 35 f***king feet of water in some areas of the city. Complicating the situation is the fact that New Orleans has levees on the lake side which are 10' above sea level. The surge which is expected to go over the levees then won't be able to get back out because of those same levees. Storm drains normally are pumped into Lake Pontchatrain.
The winds currently are 175 mph sustained and gusts to 215 mph. 10-15 inches of rain are also predicted for the area.
25% of the oil consumed in the Untied States comes from the area where Katrina is expected to travel. All of the oil refineries, drilling rigs and off shore tanker ports have been shut down. Any wishing the US economy ill, may have just gotten their wish.

Re: Good Bye New Orleans?
I was looking at the whole thing develop on the news and the one thing that became more and more apparent was the rising panic over the past while.
It's like some crazed disaster movie. I'm waiting for slow motion shots of badly made minatures and toy cars being swamped by water.

Re: Good Bye New Orleans?
Im not happy about the destruction of american property. Or the strife to the economy. Or the loss of american life.
But if your conscience, as we've seen recently, is pretty much related to your economy, then maybe this whole tragedy will only be 99% lamentable

Re: Good Bye New Orleans?
My cousin is still without power, water and is struggling to find anywhere with food in the ft lauderdale area.
it hit there and was a cat 1.
Last year i was in florida when charlie hit (cat 3 or 4 i forget). winds were gusting to 170ish and sustained at 140 or 150. that was amazing to watch. it uprooted really old trees. it swept literally straight over us.
destroyed signs. lifted up cars. flooding...and this was inland...i dread to think what katrina is going to do to new orelans tbh...

Oh, by the way, it was hurricane force winds (i'm guessing you're talking about 86 or 87), so technically he was right.

Re: Good Bye New Orleans?
when I saw the thread title, I wondered if it was being renamed as a result of continuing anti-French sentiment in the US.

That was sorted two centuries ago. We no longer use the original French name: la Nouvelle Orléans*.
*Yeah, it should have been Nouveaux Orléans--it was transgendered at birth. :/

I still thought it was interesting.

Re: Good Bye New Orleans?
Well, it seems to have gotten off relatively easily. At least it's still there...
