If that was their last memorable 'hit', then I'm not surprised they're up shit creek without propulsion.

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
I think they lost the talented staff they had to Rare who also accquired some of the licences to the games Argonaut had produced for the SNES back then.
Tbh this news didn't surprise me one bit and isn't in the least bit useful as an indicator for the gaming development market.
What you are seeing lately is companies that didn't keep up with the latest technologies dying off, Acclaim, Interplay, Argonaut etc etc

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
Interplay relied on making great games that worked. The trouble was they stuck so much into their development that one bad selling game was always going to kill them.
And it did.
Acclaim were always just a video licensing company that didnt make much in the way of new and inventive products.

Franchise games built on word of mouth with no advertising and using a basic premise that is loved by millions.
Yep, eventually , every single game will be an FPS , RTS or Football Management Sim.

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
Apparently the Harry Potter games weren't even that bad, and were considerably better than the LOTR games, for instance. Personally I can't see how there could be a worse game than Return of the King on PS2, so it wouldn't suprise me if that's true.

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
And none of those companies were developing any titles that were pushing the limits of gamers consoles/PC's in today's market which I think is the main thing here.
Other publishers that have survived are those who were brave and made the jump to taking full use of what technology can offer.

That was YEARS ago now.
I have no idea what planet you live on Sunday, but the games industry is definately not in an 'okay' shape. Developers are droppling like flies and sorry to burst a bubble, but I'm getting bored of GTA. There other games havent really been great hits (Oni and Manhunt anyone?)

Japan and America seem to get advertising campaigns far more than Europe does.
But you're right. FPS, RTS and the Sims (Football and the EA thing) is what the future looks like.

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
Games industry was in overgood shape, it's been needing this pruning for a long time.
The companies that are dropping dead now are the ones that used to get away with murder with the amounts of shite titles they'd spew out on the PS and SNES that had cheap production values.
Those markets are dead, the new market requires skilled workers and these companies weren't up to the task.
You can tell me when it's in a bad way when someone worth a shit dies off... tell me when Rare or EA etc look like facing financial ruin and I'll buy into this overhype.

It's hardly overhype. I'm not saying the Games Industry is doomed forever, but you only need to actually look at all the various developers that have gone under recently. Black Isle Studios were shit were they? Then the numerous UK developers, though the names elude em for the moment.
The last game Rare brought out was Grabbed by the Ghoulies which flopped big style, and Conka had to undergo a rewrite after a lackluster appearance at E3. Hell, even LucasArts cancelled Sam and Max due to it 'not being the right time' to release an adventure game.
Sales have been down so far for the year. Two triple A titles failed to sell as predicted (Driv3r and Hitman Contracts).
The Gaming Industry doesnt need pruning. Not when it gets rid of studios of people. If it keeps up, noone will dare risk innovation for next generation.

The PC was dry until this autumn for games. It was rather dire.
And I hate to admit it, but consoles are a good thing.

Re: Harry Potter : JUSTICE!
The only publisher I've been sorry to go was Interplay (and that's simply because I loved Fallout). The rest of them can go **** themselves.
Shame it's not EA though.
The games industry seems to be consolidating considering the absurd weight of it's own development costs. Cranking out unoriginal tripe, depending too heavily on either licences or graphical niceties and then wondering why their games don't do well. I stopped being impressed by a game's lighting some time ago.
I don't know about anyone else, but I've probably spent more time playing sub-1mb flash games over the last 12 months than I have multi-CD games.
p.s. Starfox was shit anyway.

agreed.
I've lost interest in my PS2 lately, I think the reason is that all games have been done before. For instance, PES4, not much different from PES3. Everything seems to be a sequel of a sequel now. Gran Turismo 4 yet? Driver 3? GTA 5?
Give me something new and good, and I might go back to it.

to be fair driv3r flopped due to being full of bugs and generally being released in what seems like an unfinished state

I was looking for a link of a 'generation' cycle graph that shows the difference phases which occur during the different time periods of hardware cycle. I can't find it though
But, basically, don't worry. It's *all* alright.

Interplay and Black Isle were not shit, not by a longshot. Fallout 2 is one of the best games I've ever played.
They will be missed by me.

I used to go past their offices in the north london on a regular basis.
I even thought about applying for a job there.
I'm glad i didn't.
That's the end of my little story.
Peace.
