Re: Just Brought a new car...
I have a stupidly named "Oyster Card" for travel across London!
It also means they can monitor every bus / train /etc I get on. Hurrah for the total surveillance state.

Do you change gears by looking at your rev gauge or something?
Its pretty pointless really unless you are trying to tune your car to peak performance.

If there isn't a rev counter, wouldn't something be have to be done to the engine to make one work?

Heres one for you too, if you own a mobile phone, as long as its switched on, you can be tracked to within 10 yards, all the time, always!

Re: Just Brought a new car...
without my rev gauge the car wouldve exploded along time ago.
when driving 'normally' i dont bother looking at it but when im thrashing the engine to hell and back so i can overtake i redline it in usually 2 gears to get the most speed from it.
moral of the story :
Rev gauges are aces!

Re: Just Brought a new car...
Well, since I'm not an 'uber spy' as you seem to be. I only go by what I'm told, and information about certain anti-theft measures we use in store.
It has also been discussed on several radio talkshows, dealing with mobile theft, that its possible to track phones to an area within 10 metres.
Funnily enough, on the P800 and P900, you can purchase traffic update software, which tracks your position, and informs you of any upcomming jams.
Of course, since you're so knowledgable on these things, I'll bow to your superior knowledge.

Re: Just Brought a new car...
Firstly its not a "rev guage" it's a tachometer
Secondly, they're totally pointless unless you're
a) Learning, in which case visual indication is useful to learn when to change gear
b) Some sort of boy racer who's chipped their engine and rides the redline all day
c) Not a very good driver
The engine is not going to explode if you over-rev for a few seconds on the occasional overtake, or there'd be a lot more RAC callouts every day
On the other topic of mobile phone tracking, tracking to your nearest base-station subcell is instantaneous and can pinpoint you to within a mile or so without much difficulty. Your phone is actually in contact with at least 2 base-stations most of the time, usually more. So long as you are in contact with 3 or more your position can be triangulated with minimal effort to a much greater accuracy, (it's basic trigonomics - your range from each station is a factor of your signal strength to that station).
There are other methods but it generally relies on you making a call, so any traffic system probably just monitors your current base-station lock. Accuracy of a few square miles is easily good enough to provide traffic info.
[edit]
An example application of base cell location:
http://www.psiloc.com/?id=prod&nrp=53
All a "spy" needs is a database mapping cell numbers to latitude/longitude, et voila.

Re: Just Brought a new car...
Hmm my mum was tellin me about someone who worked at the home office who gave a chat and that one thing he mentioned was his phone which needed a special license to have. It could pin point ppl who called him from their phone to within 10metres. He mentioned how it was funny when ppl rang and said I'm on the motorway when really they were still home running late and the like. I dont think he, nor my mum, were lying.

Re: Just Brought a new car...
Like i said, the accurate methods require a call to be in progress, so what you are saying makes sense.

Re: Just Brought a new car...
well, i may not actually need the tachometer, but my engine is extremely quiet, therefor im not used to reading it by sound(unlike my old car, which would tell you with the sound of ... bad sound), i would just like one there incase i need it, im not the best driver around :-/

Re: Just Brought a new car...
as far as i know rev gauges, or "revolution showing thingy" is something that will tell me how many rotations is the engine operating ATM.
RPM is a more widely used term (wordwise).
I would like to use that to monitor why my engine dies when i break in a ladder and then i try to go again =(

Re: Just Brought a new car...
The thing with all these addons townie types by (i'm not implying you are one here) is that by the time you count up all the money they've spent they could have gone and bought something like an Audi TT which has proper chrome dials to start with...

Re: Just Brought a new car...
unugly car mods...hrm, i want to say bodykits, but some body kits can look hellishly ugly, and others can look very professional, except when you mix up sideskirts and front kids from different kits
how about an all leather interior, thats not too ugly
