How much "social networking" do you do at work?
aka. "standing around chatting".
Seriously.
I know I work in the software department so ideas need to be discussed etc, but we must spend half the working day out of our seats talking to each other at desks, at test rigs, to the MD at the coffee machine... Most of it totally unrelated to work.
I'm not complaining, I'd just never envisaged so little work would be going on when I started heh.

A lot, soon I am involved in a re-organisation and I know for sure I'll never ever again will have a cool group of co-workers like I have now. Most of them are also in my msn list, some now and then we go out drinking and stuff.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
There was an article on blogging I read once which said something like : "Most jobs only require one or two hours very hard work per day. The rest of the time is just wasted - either speaking to colleagues or using the internet, or whatever".
One of the things I always found weird in every job I've done is how shockingly unproductive everyone is. I suppose it's a natural reaction to really stupid concepts like making people work 9-10 hour days (once you include commute times) and expecting them to still work hard.
As an aside, I try to avoid speaking to anyone at my work in a social sense. Except one of my friends (who I've known for 11+ years) who got a job at my work and I speak to regularly of course.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
Well, I've seen my immediate department outside of work socially a few times, at leaving events or the occasional trip to the bowling alley or whatever. The deparment is mostly 20 - 30 year olds so it's not particularly awkward or anything, people have similar interests, and talking about the latest music or whatever doesn't get met with "they don't make music like they used to" so it's pretty good.
However, the Engineering department is full of beardy old men, and Physics isn't much better either.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
I used to never talk to anyone I worked with. As I've grown up though, I've realised your colleagues can also be your friends. It makes time go faster for you, it makes people more willing to help out, it just creates a better feeling for everyone.
After all, Maslow's third need of motivation is "Belonging"!

My colleagues and I stand around half the times at work. So we end up chatting almost about everything.

I play 5ives twice a week with guys from work.
I also go out drinking with them on regular enough occassions (prolly once every couple a weeks or so).
I "make an effort".

Welcome to capitalism, its not rational, but who cares. As the productivity goes up every year, there isnt really the need for people to work more than 4-6 hours a day.

I hate small-talk (as mentioned in a recent thread) and I'm a lot more comfortable with silences than most people.
Plus, the people at work, despite being nice enough have nothing in common with me. What am I supposed to say to the usual banter on a Monday morning?
"What did you do on the weekend, Darian?"
"Erm, yeah I took some class A drugs with my teenage girlfriend, felt like death for the rest of the weekend, argued with some people on-line that child porn should be legalised and then I tried to start writing a manifesto calling for the bloody death of the bourgeoisie. Yourself?"
"I went to Ikea with the wife."

Half the times, if I come across something like this, I'd engage in a discussion about why they think child porn should be legalised. Things like that moves the crap small-talk aside. But the other half of the times, it is 'I went to [blah, blah, blah] with [blah, blah, blah] at [blah, blah, blah].'

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
Well it was our department christmas meal/pissup last night which as actually rather good.
Since most people were going straight from work, we had a "dress down day" too. My boss turned up looking like a Nequay surfer, much to everyones amusement, especially when HIS boss came in to introduce the two new managers he'd just hired to the software department and was confronted with a surfmonkey.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
We spend a lot of time sitting about doing nothing anyway (I'm working in a very quiet call centre so we spend most of our time sat around waiting for calls), so we natter a fair bit. They have also kindly just connected us all to the internet at our desks, and when we have no more admin work to do (which today took all of an hour and a half) we are free to do what we like. Its an odd set up where we have to have a seperate computer for the internet than we have for the corporate intranet, but it means that on this one I can download what I want (hello Opera!) which is a big plus.
I think they all think I'm a nerd.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
Well I do talk to most people in work and tend to be quite sociable however most people on my account in this call centre are women.
Which wouldn’t be too bad if they were interesting or attractive or not total nutbags.
One is a good laugh, shes mid 20’s and shall we say…’boysterous’. Hardly attractive though but that doesn’t really matter as I have a laugh with her. She's half english which makes her half-slapper too though :P
One is the nosiest person I’ve ever met…ever. She HAS to know whats going on no matter what. She’ll listen to conversations, peer over desks, follow people around (honestly).
One is a late 30’s german woman who is somewhat crazy yet conservative. Nuff said.
One is a pregnant 24 year old who’s been married since she was 21 and is pretty quiet. She’s an easy going person so there’s no problem there. Still somewhat strange though, country girl.
Then there’s the other one…the late 30’s alcoholic, freakish, man hunting, desperate, sad, stupid woman who is unfamiliar with the concepts of personal hygiene. She is the only person I’ve ever seriously considered strangling with an extension chord.
Put all of these women together though and you have the ULTIMATE-BITCHING-MACHINE!!!
They sit for hours on end back-biting, bitching, whining, slagging other people who they then act normal around. It’s like a school yard.
God what I wouldn’t give for some uncomplicated (non-sexual you ****ing perverts)male company involving discussions about gadgets, cars and which celebrity tits are the best.

Some do,not all. Sports in general tends to come up but never assume all men love football.
Personally my interest in it has wained over the past few years.
While we're on sterotyped assumptions of the opposite sex, what do you talk about most then Ebany? Shoes?

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
My social networking is in a "need to have basis", that being the fact that i am very friendly towards the members of my team ( its a software company) and i just say hello, goodbye to members of other teams.....
most of the time here is also devoted to mindless chatting, not by me, because i dont enjoy small talk....

Not shoes especially, but shopping, and family, and so on. And whatever tat is in the papers.
I merely mention football from experience. Every workplace I have been in, the men talk about football. Here the engineers leave their own little sanctuarys and come out just to sit and talk about it.
Us girls sit and look bored or talk about other things.
Or do work. If we really have to.

Yep. They guys I work with talk about either football or the latest episode of Little Britain or Monkey Dust or whatever crap they have been watching that week. The women talk about Eastenders/Corrie or some other mind numbingly boring soap, or generally gossip about other staff/people they know/celebrities.

Thankfully we dont seem to have any soap discussions here, although we do all sit around and moan about Wife Swap (we dont actually watch it mostly, we just complain about it - one of the women keeps being forced to watch it by her mum).
We talk about holidays a lot too. People seem to go on a lot of holidays and spend lots of time on the internet finding cheap cruises and things. I just wish I could afford one.

Re: How much "social networking" do you do at work?
Don`t do networking at all where I work. I have nothing in common with the people I work with, except the fact we work in the same place. One guys an ex-copper, another guy who`s bent as nine pound note (who by the way keeps going to the toilet to change his trousers every so often), and a whole room full of very late middle aged women who just fit there for hours on end gossiping. No wonder I sit here all day surfing the internet.
