I smell gas...
in my bedroom.
I think it must be coming from my radiator. I've turned off the boiler for the night. Is there a way of detecting gas through a device or something?
I'm going to sleep in the sitting room for now. But I'd appreciate if you can help.
Good night.

Re: I smell gas...
turn the electricity off, phone your gas company and report a leak. I think there might even be a special number for reporting leaks

Re: I smell gas...
phone transco pronto.
webby at http://www.nationalgrid.com/uk/Gas/Safety/Emergency/
phone number at 0800 111 999
its a 24 hour number with operators on it, so phone asap
turning off the electricity is a sensible precaution, also not switching on or off lights is another ( since they spark ever so slightly when switching )

Radiators don't have gas in them, they heat up water so it's unlikely to be that.
But you should be able to turn off the gas at the meter and if you seriously think you smell gas then phone transco as Phil has said. They can advise further.

They don't do that either, they just contain hot water.

Re: I smell gas...
writing an 'i might be dead by the morning, goodnight' thread and then not posting again in the morning isn't funny !!?!?!?
have visions of tomorrows metro headline about the dangers of not reporting a gas leak.

Re: I smell gas...
You can't smell gas, you smell the stuff they mix gas with to recognise a gasleak.

Wich is probably also in gas form though? I don't quite know myself, but that would be the most logical thing to mix in it. (:

Re: I smell gas...
I'm still alive guys.
And for some reason the smell has dispappeared. But I'm still going to get someone to inspect the place though.

this being GD and all.
Anyway, yes if your gas is downstairs in a boiler or something, it would be a bit weird for your bedroom to smell.

Natural gas and piped propane smell like rotten eggs or sulphur. Because natural gas is odourless, we add trace amounts of a chemical called mercaptan, which has a distinctive rotten egg or sulphur-like odour. It smells bad for a good reason! In case of a leak, we want you to be able to detect and identify it. We never charge to investigate gas odour call.
