He was never on the left. It left Cole with nowhere to go forwards, and gave him no cover at the back. He didn't just drift in, he was often seen on the right wing.

2) It's like a penalty for him, he's going to shoot, not pass it
3) sticking a man on the line makes sense

passing it from there would be ****ing stupid. There's enough players in the box to charge down any resulting shot, which would mean they would be even less likely to score compared to just having a go from the free kick.

its why basically no teams do it from that range.

the offensive team has a majority because of the wall, and without the offside to neutralize that advantage, the defensive team will receive a goal with a very high probability.

And the free kick was the fault of David James. None of this "on the line defender" lark. The wall is covering one side of the goal, James is not covering the other sufficiently. The free kick is at a decent, saveable height. He should've got there but "oh well".
