Zik is alright. It's a race for the long haul. If you can hold onto your value, get a few decent steals in defence (for value gains in salvage), Zik can work out extremely well.
You're right though, losing a large part of your fi/co fleet by stealing a fr/de fleet (for example) can be very annoying, especially if you're in an alliance in which the plan was mass fi/co. Being the only fr/de planet in a fi/co alliance is very tough. Pick your targets carefully, hit planets of which you would like to steal: if they run, you get roids, if they stay, you get ships.
Alternatively, go light on the stealers that target the wrong classes. The stats can help out as well: last time I played Zik fi/co, they stole fi/co and killed co/fr. This meant that whenever you hit fi/co, you'd always get ships you could use, but when you hit fr/de, you wouldn't suddely end up with a bunch of ships you didn't want.
