[Controversial Discussion] GOD
Just as the title says.
Do you believe in the existence of God?
What are your reasons for believing or disbelieving in him?
I raise these questions because most people say things about God but when you question their beliefs and counter their arguments they just shrug off the issue. Why talk about God if you have no knowledge about him or his existence?
This is meant to be an intellectual discussion. Avoid posting utter crap, spam *cough* YAWHE *cough* and dont insult people for their beliefs.

I prefer to think there is SOME kind of benevolent, uber being, in that way im a kind of Deist

Hardly controversial.
But in answer, yes, but I'm not a great fan of his.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
This isn't particularly controversial.
Anyway, I'm an atheist.
I'm not really sure of what "reasons" you want. It's kind of the same reason I don't believe in Santa Claus or the Loch Ness Monster.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
and as for my reasons in believing in him, i guess its mostly because the universe seems so finely tuned to "us". Also because of certain events that have happened in my life that im not going to go into.
Also because im scared and i need a psychological crutch.

That's not really the best analogy is it, at least the Santa one, given it's "known" he doesn't exist. You may argue it's "known" that God doesn't exist, but I never saw my dad dressing up as God and creating the world in a week.

How was it possible you made it up? You just conjured up a few ideas from experience, ie Happy Fags=Gay which is homo/happy, goblins are mythical creatures, third moon can be influenced by planets having more than one moon and if i knew you pretty well i could probably explain the name of the planet.
Explain God to me if no one has seen him, felt his presence or knew of his existence

And plenty of people have said they "are" God (or the Son of God, etc) so I don't really get your dressing up point.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
because people WANTED to believe in god because they didn't understand the world. So they created something to explain it... gawd, this is hardly ground breaking discussion here inferno.

Goblins look like short men. Someone just jumbled them with animals to make them look like they are. What I am trying to get at is our imagination is bound to the world we see. We cant make anything which havent seen. Similarly a thousand years ago the notion of robot would never have come to them.

My point is it's 110% sure that Santa does not exist, noone bar children believes other wise.
How can you "know" god does not exist in the same way? And noone really believes that these people are god, besides Jesus ofc.

Might I add the fact that people are not Gods in anyway. Just in case you get confused.
And the issue of son of god is debatable. If you wish I will consider making another thread on that long and boring issue.

How about people feeling that they are all alone in the world, that there is no reason to life or to existance. People cannot handle the idea that this is it. We live, we die, we rot in the ground. People need something greater than that. HOLD ON ONE MINUTE! Wasn't the Earth created by GOD? Aren't we here because God wanted us here, he put us here? Isn't it great that when we die if we ask for forgiveness for all our sins God will allow us in to the Kingdom of Heaven. I bet everything's rosy there! Hurrah! I no longer feel alone. I no longer feel that life is pointless. Hurrah for GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
etc.
(PS I do not believe in God - reason? - I have seen no evidence for his existance.)

i'd suggest that there's as much irrefutable evidence of santa's existance as there is of god's.
it seems that both are only believed in by those who want to believe.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
Which God? Do you mean the Christian God? The Muslim Allah? The Hindu Gods? The Roman/Greek Gods?
There is no way of proving/disproving the existance of whatever God(s) you're talking about.
However - due to the complexity involved in the origins of life etc, it's perfectly understandable to believe that an entity designed the universe, breathed life into living things and controls fate. It is also understandable to believe that something happens after you die (and in some religions before you were born), because otherwise what's the point of it all?
Organised religion really annoys me though. God hates gays? God hates non-believers? God hates people who have sex before they get married? Bollocks.

I believe that God does not exist, furthermore God is the manifestation of many creations designed by man to mould mankind into a certain line of righteousness.

Who has the right to say what God hates and loves? And in case you didnt know there is sufficient evidence to prove that the same God is believed in Christianity, Judaism and Islam. They only differ in how they worship him and Gods rulings as well as a few other things.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
In a sweeping generalization, the people who believe (and worship) in God are generally those, who are more primitive-minded with beliefs and morals of more aged times. These people are also ones who have either been reduced* to, or been blindly brought up to religious teachings to sustain them upon 'a line of righteousness**'.
To me, God is nothing more than a tool for inspiration.
*horrid problems - ie, loss of a loved one or general life crisis can lead to an extra belief(read: hope) in God as a motivational catalyst to change things around. Though, same issues could ofcourse easily lead into the exact opposite path and a complete disbelief in god due to 'his lack of apparent care' etc.
**righteousness which is obviously defined by the morals created long ago and chiselled into it's current state.

In that case, no. I do not believe in any notion of "God" which attributes him/her with any form of consciousness or otherwise human attributes.

Re: [Controversial Discussion] GOD
People have come with countless explanations of how the universe came to existence but they always seem to have failed as their theories constantly have flaws. If the universe was not created by God and all of it was down to chance then why isnt there a single theory which has no faults?
Science does a good job of telling how things work in the world but science cannot tell us they how the came about. One example is energy. Science tells us energy cannot be made. If it cant be made how it come to exist? I guarantee you that even if science could explain that there will be another question on that issue that will follow that science cannot explain.
This world is fine tuned to perfection so that life can exist. Now why would that be? And of all the creatures in the world we are above them. Chance? Millwall FC in the FA Cup final was chance. Not this.
What most people fail to understand is that the existence of God can never be physically proven. If it was then all humans would believe and enter paradise, nirvana or what have you. But we do have is signs of his existence through his creation. Even your own body is a sign, but that is if you choose to see it that way.
This would raise another question on the purpose of life. I cant explain that because I am not qualified to do so if you understand what I mean.

The beginning of the Universe is a bit complex to say the least. Just because there isnt a single definitive theory it doesnt mean the answer has to be God. If God created the universe where did God come from? If you cant explain that does that mean he cant exist?

Energy can be made in certain circumstances.

Evolution makes perfect sense.
