Acceptable processor temperature
I want to ask at which temperature a processor (newish XP or p4) starts dying.
Or: how high can you go without risking instability?

Thank you. Thing is that my father has bought a 2200+ XP which came with a fan the size of a fingernail, and it's quite unstable. After crash I've registered temperatures up to 67 C.

Thats 'bad'.
I suggest either a new, larger fan, or an open case and large quantity of bacon sandwhiches...

When you get a new heatsink scrape that thermal pad ****e off the bottom of it and use Arctic Silver instead, much better thermal conductivity for a little more effort, and get a decent fan for the sink (don't bother with the one it comes with as they aren't generally that ace) if it's a cheapo heatsink
Try www.tekheads.co.uk for cooling madness

The thermometer is built into almost all modern motherboards. You should be able to see the current temperature in the BIOS, or you could download tools like Sandra or Motherboard Monitor.

My XP1700+ is at 45 degrees (between idle and stressed, I've never really pushed it) and I have half a KG of a heatsink on it. (the ZalMan 6k CU silent heatsink)
My case temp is less nice tho, as it's 37 degrees and I can't figure out where it comes from (as I've got two case fans).

The max recommended temp for AMD XP's is 70 degrees, when they usually reset (you can change it) Altho somewhere between 45-55 degees is best. My XP 1800 is at 50 degree's atm
Aparently the actual chip wont die until 90 degrees but I have never tried it.
