Was it all worth it?
We spent quite a nice number of hours sending imaginary ships across imaginary universe - two years give or take.
Now i wonder as im sure lots of you wondered at some point in time - was it all worth it?
It was and it wasnt for me. I met lotsa new friends, even met some of them in RL when i invited them in my country. Im prolly going skiing in April to Norway with my gf becouse of PA and i had some nice moments after succesful attacks or defenses that gave me the adrenaline rush we all need here and there.
On the other hand i have wasted an ennourmous ammount of time and sleep on this online game, that will never came back to me. Countless books i could of read, countless shows i could of seen, countless people i could of meet in RL.
Im waging the two sides and can decide - It was a choice i made and i wont let my self regret it.
How about you... Was it all worth it?

totally worth it, i dont think i've missed out on anything over the last 2 years, but from it i know i've met loadsa interesting people, had a certain sense of 'power' and had some great fun times. OK so those times when i was DC weren't that great, (worst time when every tick a new batch of incoming arrived, and by the time i covered everything i had to 'get up' for work - heh)
yes TOTALLY worth it

in my real life over the past few years i have fallen pretty seriously ill, I'm no longer at school and have lost a lot of friends from school etc who couldnt be bothered making the effort to stay in contact. However, the sole reason I persuaded my paretns to get the internet at home was so I coud continue playing this game that i'd been playing at school when i got home. It was through the internet that I identified my illness, and also through the internet that I discovered the support group that put me in contact with my now girlfriend. If it hadnt been for PA, I would never have suggested in the first place we got online as a family, and I would quite probably be struggling to cope at school, or hundreds of times worse form an illness I could not identify.
I'll certainly miss PA when i'ts gone, its been my one constant while so much else around me has changed. I've never been the best player, ive never won a round, but i'm still one of PA's most die-hard fans, and i sincerely doubt any game or community will touch me in teh same way ever again as this one has.

It took 8 rounds to weed out the ones who did not think it was worth it so we should have left mostly the ones who did think it was !!!

Playing PA is a unique experience, I don't think there's anything else even remotely like it on the web right now. The dedication and devotion to people you've never even met and probably never will is unbelievable in any other context.
Whether Eve/SWG will inspire the same dedication remains to be seen but I doubt it, someone somewhere round here has (or had) a sig saying that internet gamers can be divided into two categories, those who play planetarion and those who used to play planetarion. Personally I'm glad I was part of it, even if I was a little late finding it

pa was worth it.
i saw it as a hobby, i spend time and money through my dial up on it.
i played from work and from the disco through meh wap mobile, i woke up at meh gfs appartment to drive home to recall fleets etc.
i was glad that ive to wake up through my work at 5 am...much easier for the case of incomings.....
im addicted and im thinking that a life without it could be much easier.....
through dial up i had horrible costs (dsl was a long time not available here and fk tonline cutted long ago the isdn flat rate...)
well, i lost no friends through it, i lost no social contacts and im playing from work what means i couldnt fk up school ;-)......
i c it as a hobby....and im glad if it will be once over but for the meantime its worth it

I doubt my rl has changed at all, i still do all i did before i started to play pa and now i got new people i got to know to meet up with and have a few beers.
Does explain why every now and again i lose roids, but if i am at a party and i get a sms telling me i got incomming i will stay at the party.
rl + sleep > pa.

Absolutely. Your comment on imaginary ships isn't quite true, however. I am currently being interviewed for a position with the Martian Defence Command and my experiences here have been a great help. They are watching my progress this round (Signs was anything but fiction) and will make their decision partially based on it. So please help me to look good so I can live my dream.

Definately worth it for me. Made loads of friends (many of which I have or will meet in the near future)....like to think I have gained the respect of many people, whether they have met me or not....have actually grown from from newbie to the 'top' of the game on my own, not starting there or taking shortcuts like some....had loads of fun and learnt some things that I'm sure will help me in "real life"....and above all I met the girl of my dreams (cue soppy romantic music interupted by people laughing at the "nerd").

+ new friends / contacts
+ much diversion from boring life
+ priorities identified now
- cost (i wont count)
- friends looking weird at you when u talk about it (none lost tho)
- sleep lost
- study skyrocketed once i looked less serious at the game...
- gf, but it wasnt going to be much anyway \o/
overall i rate the influence of this game on my life: positive. its been quite an experience, which i wouldnt have wanted to miss out. tho i wont play any longterm online game anymore.

The actual game itself, not really.
The community however, made it all worthwhile.

Yes, for me it was worth it.
I met some great guys (and gals) IRC was a complete mystery to me before I played this game, (it still is but I can use it)
I have spent 2 years of my life being abused, giving abuse, and having a great deal of fun in the process.
There is not another game or community like it anywhere on the web, it will be a great shame to see it go.
My thanks go to Spinner, Zeus, Oreo, and an old favourite of mine Plexus, who gave me an insght into the game, The PA crew, 5th Season team and the players. (even the ones who bashed me) hello Taratang and the Legion Hordes. Though my first bashing was at the hands of TFD.
The long hours spent defending, and attacking, fleet swapping in galaxy to confuse attackers (sometimes) The lies the fake logs, everything that gave this game a driving force forward.
Thankyou 5th Season

my thought exactly.
it did have some bad influences on me, but i sometimes ask myself this question: if i wouldnt play PA, then what? what would i have done with the all that time? prolly would have spent more time on school but then i'd prolly b a schoolnerd nah, its done some harm to me yeah, but also has taught me stuff.
I would like to thank Inspiration for introducing me into PA in r4, sadly even u (the least person i'd expected to) quit PA for the final round ffs!(im the only 1 left from my original r4 gal :'()
ohwell, in r6 my activity skyrocketed cuz of good round, permanent i-net and ONE HELL OF A GALAXY and later on (and still) a very tight group of friends which, i hope, wont fall apart after the end of PA.
/me salutes dfa

No, I was never in SL, or in any alliance upto this round (with any great conviction that is).
I was bashed by TFD because I objected to being attacked by one of there members, next day I was on the recieving end of a serious bashing.

I should have quited when I intended to, after r4.
/me kicks himselfs for not doing it
But then I have meet a lot of intersting people after that, or people Ive gotten better known with. (lo Asmo, Salomo and others)Also the community itselfs, and specially the alliances are and have been interesting in themselfs. The changes of an alliance has lot common with the changing of organizations and political parties in rl. Atleast if your in lenninst organized communist party like myself.
and not atleast, my r8 has some nice fellows in it Wub ya!

this thread makes me teary-eyed
i have loved every minute of planetarion (even when i almost broke my hand punching stuff that one night in r6 where we were backstabbed to hell and back -- remember that thomaz? ). i will say that ive probably sacrificed quite a bit for planetarion, but if i could do it all over again, i wouldnt change a thing.
however, i will salute everyone now, as i will not be joining any other online games (DoM, eve, etc), because i wont make it out of uni if i continue to play. even if i could, im not sure if i would start another game -- planetarion is planetarion, and i would feel like any other game would just pale in comparison. id probably spend the entire time just comparing it to PA and thinking about PA this and PA that.
i wouldnt change a thing about the past 2 years that ive been playing planetarion. i am enroute to norway in march2003 to visit my PA-family for the first time -- old galm8s from r5 and r6.
/me salutes DFA as well
Planetarion was not worth the things that i sacrificed for it, but i would gladly do it all over again

I have tried to quit A LOT of times..
Every time; I enjoy RL, wonder why i bothered playing PA at all and then return, still hating myself for it...
It's a ****ing drug, i hate it still need it. And no, i'm not a RL loser at ALL. I just enjoy this game too much...
I remember recommending PA to a mate (Hi Ak'shen) telling him about this cool new game i just started with that only required 10mins of playing each day... Young & stupid..
Worth it? Even though i wish i had never started with it, i actually did. So yes, i guess it WAS worth it.
R I P Planetarion, Thanks for all the good times.
/me moves on to DoM... Hope to see alot of you come with me !
