Dial on demand

Ok, I'm trying to (at long last, I am so idle ) set up DOD on my linux box. I can connect with wvdial so that's ok, I've made a dod file in my /etc/ppp/peers directory, basically a copy of the wvdial file already in there with the commands wvdial passes to pppd added. Oh, and connect="/usr/bin/wvdial -chat". Now, if I try to connect using pppd call dod it dials, tries to connect, then just dies and I have no idea why. Anyone ever set up DOD? The only time I ever did it was using a GUI in SuSE

/etc/wvdial.conf
Code:
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = /dev/ttyS1
Baud = 115200
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
Phone = XXXXXXXXXXXX
Username = snazbaz
Password = XXXXXXXX
/etc/ppp/peers/dod
Code:
noauth
name wvdial
connect "/usr/bin/wvdial --chat connectlite"
/dev/ttyS1
115200
modem
crtscts
defaultroute
usehostname
user snazbaz
idle 600
persist
demand
Then "pppd call dod" is executed on startup. Works a charm

Code:
[root@mrpinky /root]# wvdial --version
WvDial 1.41: Copyright (c) 1998-2000 Worldvisions Computer Technology, Inc.
[root@mrpinky /root]# pppd --version
pppd version 2.4.0

I was missing the 'user' line from the dod file, I added it (no mention of it in the FAQ or the arguments wvdial sends to pppd) and it now works. You sir, are a God! Thank you \o/

pleh, alternative using just pppd
Code:
/etc/ppp/chatfile
TIMEOUT 60
ABORT "NO CARRIER"
ABORT "NO DIALTONE"
ABORT "ERROR"
ABORT "NO ANSWER"
ABORT "BUSY"
ABORT "Username/Password Incorrect"
"" "AT"
OK "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"
OK "ATDT0123456789"
'CONNECT' ''
'TIMEOUT' '5'
Code:
/etc/ppp/options
lock
user haydn_jenny
defaultroute
192.168.255.250:192.168.255.251
ipcp-accept-remote
ipcp-accept-local
idle 600
demand
Code:
/etc/ppp/peers/isp
ttySLT0 115200 crtscts
connect '/usr/sbin/chat -f /etc/ppp/chatfile'
noauth
And then of course, you need your /etc/ppp/*-secrets set up right.

Incidentally snaz, do you get a set of fake ip's before you connect the first time - I cant see them being set, tho maybe wvdial does it.
The fake IP's are so that the ppp0 interface exists before it is brought up (if that makes sense) so that I can run a masquerade script and have the connection brought up by any machine on the local subnet.

I don't get fake IPs using WvDial/pppd, keeps my routing table nice and clean Diald did horrible things to it when I was experimenting with it

I did however find one problem at 4am this morning when it started dialling for no apparent reason. Just when I though I had it all sorted I have to play 'hunt the packet'

Mong is on a distinguished road
This could well be your friend, if you have a spare machine with;

486 min
16mb RAM
A fairly standard NIC
A fairly standard modem

Hairless Dialup

DialD _IS_ horrible

I looked at that before I figured out how to do it with just ppp

Before that, I actually just ran wvdial as a term \o/
