Odd Behaviour: FreeBSD 4.7 is ignorant!
I wasn't sure whether to duplicate the thread here, or just paste a link to an external forum, where I've asked for help with a FreeBSD problem I have.
http://www.freebsdforums.org/forums/...&threadid=5318
Obviously they're dedicated BSD ppl, but just wondered if anybody here has an idea?
Ta,
M.

2 guesses...
1. You have some sort of HDD (or other) power management enabled, disable it
2. You have too little RAM and Apache is being swapped out after being unused for a while and the timeout is too short for your box to swap it back in again without an error.
Either is possible but not necessarily likely...

The box has 256mb RAM...
Mem: 15M Active, 174M Inact, 33M Wired, 5820K Cache, 35M Buf, 20M Free
And (as I describe in the link) I took steps to work out if it was power management related...

Could it be memory related?
I've not had experience with apache, but I had something that sounds similar happen to the web proxy/cache I'm using here (squid). I kept on having my net connection cut out on me after using it for a while (like 6 hours or so) and couldn't for the life of me figure what was going on, as the modem was still connected and fine, and I could ping the machine with the proxy on it. The only way I could get it back was to reboot the proxy machine.
It eventually transpired that squid was running out of memory (the machine is only a P200 with 64Mb RAM) because I hadn't set a lower filesize limit for files entering the cache. Every time it used all the RAM up squid shut down, denying every machine connected to it the ability to use the connection.
Setting a lower limit of 4Kb fixed it as that stopped it getting cluttered up with all the tiny little files that come in from various places.
Is it possible that there's some process thats slowly using all your ram and forcing other processes to be shut down or suspended?

Megla/Gayle: This *is* possible, yes, thinking about it... how would I find out?
Also, why would these processes start up again?

Not being much of a linux techie I dunno.
Best wait for Gayle to sort you out on that one.
Or you could try hitting MT or some of the other #linux crew over the head in a nice kind of way.

Mines 2 sugars then. And don't make it too milky either!
Mong, short of using a bit of common sense (ie. monitor running processes, look for ones with high ram usage, see if they take progressively more etc etc) there's not much I can recommend.
If you're not allready running 'bare bones' try stopping everything you don't absolutely need and leaving it overnight again, to see if it's Apache itself causing the problem or something else getting in the way.

I should point out that it's not just Apache that freezes, but SSH, FTP, etc...

Coming back to the right thread again
I can't find what I was looking for (an online port scanner that allows you to enter the IP address to be scanned) so I'll have a play with nmap when I get home to see what (if anything) is alive.

There's at most 15% (quick estimate) of your memory accounted for by process space then.
If it is a memory problem, then you need to be looking at ram that's cached or used in buffers. How you get to that I'm not sure.
Incidentally, whats the command to list processes like that? I was told how to do it once and can't remember now (right when I need it myself...).

also top will tell you whats running (in realtime!), as well as giving a memory usage and cpu breakdown
